Tools and Hardware Reviews of Danco 88821 2-3/4-Inch Tub Mesh Strainer, Stainless

Customer Review: Know what you're getting with this item
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased this item but only after reading all the reviews. One person said that it stopped up quickly because it caught all the soap scum and hairs. My first impression was...yeah, that's what it's supposed to do since it is a 'strainer'.
But after a week of use, I now see they didn't elaborate on the real problem and that is HAIR. For us guys that have body hair it's a pain in the butt because it catches everything and you're standing in 2 inches of water before the shower is over.
Most disappointing but I had to try it to see if there was any possibility of it working. If you're female, it might work well but for me, it's gone in the trash.
The product is NOT bad, it just doesn't do what I need it to do. I can remember buying bath tub strainers in hardware stores in past years which were made like the sink strainers. Yep, same principle but just larger for the tubs. 21/4 inch by 3/4 of an inch or so deep. Long story short, I'm still looking for a good bathtub strainer.

Customer Review: Love it
Summary: 5 Stars

I have long, thick hair. Pulling it off of my comb each time I shower and setting it aside to throw away was helping my drain stay clear, but I know some hair gets through. I bought this to help catch what I don't put to the side.

It fits into my bathtub drain just fine. Mesh is very small to catch everything, and it did. I will probably have to clean the thing out after every shower, but that's okay. If any soap gets caught up a quick rinse under hot water and a bit of rubbing at the mesh with thumb and forefinger clean it off. If it starts to build up a soap scum I spray it with Tilex and hit with an old toothbrush. Ta da.

It's a good, cheap and preventative measure that means less snaking the pipes and less standing water in the tub.

Customer Review: Meh x 2.

I should have taken better note of other reviewers' complaints. This strainer will, indeed, prevent absolutely everything from entering your drain: hair, soap, shampoo, and water. I just tossed mine, after a few months of use, when it started discoloring. If, however, you're looking to protect your drain while soaking your feet in slightly used bathroom products, then this is your huckleberry.

Customer Review: More information on measurements
Summary: 5 Stars

I wasn't able to find any information online about the diameter on these strainers so I finally just went to ace hardware and measured them myself in the store. I thought I'd share in case other want to know as well:

The smallest one is 2 1/4 inch in diameter. The inner opening where the basket dips is 3/4 inch in diameter.

The medium size is 2 3/4 inch in diameter. The inner basket diameter is about 1 inch.

The largest one is 4 1/2 inch in diameter. The inner diameter is about 2 inch.

--My drain is 2 1/4 inches in diameter and I found the large one works perfectly. I tried the small and medium ones too but is slid around too much in the drain--

Customer Review: Nicely made, works well

This is one of those simple products that comes in very handy and works well. Nothing fancy - just a mesh screen that traps hair before it gets into the bathtub drain. It does not have a large capacity - I have very short hair (what little of it is left, sorry to say) and still need to clean it every few days. If you have long hair, you'll probably need to clean it daily. But, it's a lot easier to clean out a mesh screen than have to deal with pulling hair out of the drain!

I used to have one of those flat screens that cover the drain, and this works much better (traps more hair) and is easier to clean. Plus, it stays put since the screen is recessed into the drain.

It's sized to fit a standard bathtub drain perfectly. It's too small, however, for a standard shower drain.

Highly recommend.
