Tools and Hardware Reviews of Dap 18324 Seal 'N Peel Removable Caulk, 10.1-OunceCustomer Review: Absolutely works, but ventilation is essential Summary: 5 Stars
Short review: Buy this, you won't regret it.
Long version:
My drafty old double-hung windows were so bad that we could rarely eat at our kitchen table because of the cold. Besides the draft along all sides, the top half of several windows would drop down about 1/4". That's a big space for heat to escape through when it's below freezing outside.
After doing much research, I thought this product seemed like the easiest and least expensive choice for my first attempt at saving some heating cost, and increasing our comfort level for the winter. After a season with it in place, I still believe this is true.
I installed the Seal N Peel in the beginning of October, and now it's March, so I've had plenty of time to evaluate its effectiveness. It has completely eliminated any draft whatsoever, and I will definitely be using it again next winter. Our oil consumption has decreased by somewhere between 5-11% compared to last year.
Of course that number doesn't mean much since the temperatures vary from season to season, but I am no less happy with the savings I've realized.
The fumes. There are reviews all over the web about the strength of the fumes, and they really are powerful. Ventilation will be necessary if you choose this product.
Again, ventilation will absolutely be necessary if you choose this product.
After a few seasons of nightmarish winters, I started looking into this early on in the season, and was able to get away with leaving all my doors open. I also have a few windows that crank closed, and decided that these didn't need sealing, so I was able to get some ventilation by having doors and windows open and pointing fans out these.
Even so, I estimate the fumes to be about equivalent to those of a full days worth of interior latex paint usage. You don't want to hang around and breathe the stuff. It took a good 8 hours to clear most of the smell, even with doors and windows open and using fans. There was still a fainter, noticeable smell lasting well into the day after I applied the product.
I hate to say it, but if you're reading this review and its already getting very cold, this probably isn't going to be a good solution for you this season. I still recommend grabbing some for next year and applying early.
I have what I believe are fairly large windows, 48x48 and 43x49, and each tube got me through a little more than one and a half windows. I laid it on pretty thick in order to try and keep that top half of the windows up. This was effective, but if you don't have such visibly large gaps to fill, or have smaller windows, you could easily get at least two windows done per tube.
My summary is that this is a definite buy, if and only if you are able to apply early enough to make arrangements for heavy ventilation.
Customer Review: Beware the fumes! Summary: 2 Stars
Read what others have posted. I checked in on the product right after I bought and applied it to two windows. It is the worst smelling stuff to ever come out of a caulk gun. Reminds me of plastic model cement, and the dose is huge!
I saw that the stuff works great for what it is intented for, sealing cracks, but after an hour, I had to remove it. I wasn't going to endure a couple days of curing for my health. Please, use adequate ventilation, and don't make the same mistake I did in applying it during the winter.
Customer Review: Buy it. Great. Summary: 5 Stars
I have a big one-bedroom apartment with TEN French doors on the outside (five balconies) of this 1915 building, and no central heating (in cold Washington DC) but in-wall units. People have spoken of my place as "The Meat Locker" it has been so cold in winter, but the difference is amazing (I just checked and it is 15 degrees out and 70 degrees inside with not much heat cranking). The clear "caulk" is absolutely invisible. I am stocking up in case they go out of business.
Customer Review: DAP 18324 10.1 oz Seal 'N Peel Caulk Summary: 1 Stars
DAP 18324 10.1 oz Seal 'N Peel Caulk After following the instructions on the tube, it didn't adhere to the window frame.
Customer Review: DAP Seal N Peal Caulk Summary: 4 Stars
After reading all the reviews, I decided to purchase the DAP Seal N Peal caulk. I installed it on all of my windows, and because I have a 1 month old and 2 year old, we stayed at my parents house for the next day. There is an obvious odor after install, and I was did get a headache towards the end, which may or may not have been related. The bottom line, is that I am very satisfied with this product! I'm sure it will make a difference on my heating and cooling bill. Just don't hang around for 1-2 days after you install.
