Tools and Hardware Reviews of Duke Company Pecan Nut Cracker

Customer Review: Even cracks hazelnuts
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this because the nuts keep slipping out of my hand held nutcracker and kept pinching my fingers. My husband loves hazelnuts but has a hard time craking the shell with the hand held nutcraker so he started using his teeth. The first thing I did when I opened the box was to crack a few hazelnuts and it did its job.

Customer Review: Excellent Nut Cracker
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an excellent nutcracker for someone who wants to crack pecans or other tree nuts and finds using lightweight nutcrackers tiring or too slow. It could be useful for someone who doesn't have the strong grip needed for hand-held nutcrackers. I bought this nutcracker for my mother who is in her 80s. She loves pecans, but using hand-held nutcrackers was slow and tiring for her. She is very pleased with this nutcracker.

Customer Review: Excellent Value and Function, For What It Is
Summary: 5 Stars

We've bought two of these, the first as a gift, the second for us.

They're manufactured in China, and the finish can be quite variable, not to mention a bit hasty. Hopefully, though, you'll keep it for decades, if not generations, and as it gets beat up, the patina may add to its charm and hide any original defects in the finish.

The gift recipient was ecstatic and thought it was the best nutcracker he had ever seen. Also, he found it very easy to use, even with his arthritic hands. We're exceedingly happy with ours, too, even though it came with sloppier chrome plating than the first one. For the price, it's a wonderful gizmo, fun to show to other people, who are generally fascinated with seeing it work.

It works like a charm, for what its designed to do: cracking a bunch of nuts from the same tree in a hurry. Adjust it properly, and you can shell a lot of nuts with a lot less work. This is clearly not intended for casual use with a bag of mixed nuts. Use something else for that, unless you really enjoy adjusting things a lot.

It has a very wide range of adjustment, but it doesn't come with instructions, and a couple other reviewers didn't figure it out one important thing for themselves.

You know that little smooth part that sticks out the back of the adjustable screw, that you probably use as a handle to adjust the screw? That's the end for cracking small nuts. Remove the screw, turn it around with the small end facing the piston, and it adjusts perfectly for small nuts. It will crack small filberts without having to "suspend" the screw at all. The entire thing can be inside the threads, flush with the back end, and crack small nuts.

While you could probably cheat for medium-small nuts, and simply screw the large end in so far that the threads were no longer fully seated in the housing, you're risking wrecking it. It's not designed for that.

Overall, it's a great tool, a great value, and if you're an optimist, any defects in the finish just make it look more like a quaint antique that came out of the back of the garage. We love it.

Customer Review: Good Cracker but not for black walnuts
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased this sturdy lookinf nut cracker based on a couple of reviews that stated they used it to crack black walnuts with ease. I don't know how they done it as it is a strong cracker and good for most your average nut and definitely would have no problem with pecan as it is named to do. However it isn't for black walnuts that grow in the Blue Ridge Mtns of NC though as Mom and Dad got it and thought they would be able to throw away the hammer and anvil but no such luck as dad with all his might couldn't even get one nut to bust open with the nut cracker as not enough leverage there to do it. Maybe if you modify it a bit to make a longer handle and mount it on the wall somehow to where you could get some down pressure on the nut it would do it but then it could be dnagerous with hard shell particles flying around in my opinion. So i would say if you looking to crack a load of pecans, hazel nuts or white or english walnuts you can't go wrong but don't plan on using it with much success with black walnuts and hickory nut either as it doesn't come together close enough or adjust out enough to do a nut that small from what I saw anyway. Thanks Jeff

Customer Review: Good Nut Cracker

Quick shipping. Product was as described. It works very well. I can't see where similar products at 3 times the cost could work any better. The Duke Company makes a very good product for a good price.
