Tools and Hardware Reviews of Dustless Technologies MU405 Cougar Ash Vacuum, Black

Customer Review: Great ash vac
Summary: 5 Stars

Purchased this vac a month ago and love it! I use it daily to clean out my pellet stove and it's pretty quiet (for a vac!)and powerful and well constructed. Shipping was great it arrived fairly quickly! Like the fact the metal nozzle is curved a bit so that you can get into hard to reach areas! I didn't purchase add'l tools as I don't need it so why spend the extra money. I can't understand why some folks complained about noise level. Not so in my opinion! It's not a huge unit so you can easily place it in a corner out of site! I totally recommend this ash vac it makes my life a lot easier and avoids your hands from getting pretty dirty and sooty!

Customer Review: Great ash vacuum
Summary: 5 Stars

I burn about 12 cords of wood each season. This is an excellent product IF USED PROPERLY. I saw some complain about it getting clogged and does not work. Well this is NOT a vacuum up anything in the stove unit. I use it to help control dust and ash in the room. I scoop up the ash and place it in a bucket with a lid that flips up and I place the nozzle inside to help keep the dust and any smoke from getting out. Once I have all the big pieces I fine clean in the stove and around to clean up any mess. There is no other way to do this and my wife is very sensitive to dust and since I started to use the couger she notices the reduced dust in the air and this is a large room and we still had a lot of dust overall but no more. So for those that find an issue with the unit read how to use this properly and this is not a cure all but another tool to add to help keep the fireplace clean. It was worth every penny. I have no complaints about this unit.

Customer Review: Great for cleaning pellet stoves
Summary: 3 Stars

If you have a pellet stove, this vacuum is an absolute must. I don't really see the benefit of using it for a fireplace, though; we have a wood-burning furnace and continue to use a shovel to clean it out. The crimped nozzle design and the idea of vacuuming with the nozzle against the firebrick to only pick up ash and leave solids behind sounds good, in THEORY. The problem is that the solids quickly build up around the nozzle from the suction and any particles too large to fit inside the nozzle get stuck there the second you lift the nozzle to position it elsewhere. This design would work if there was perhaps a screen fitted over the nozzle to prevent this from happening.

To clean a pellet stove, though, it is absolutely ideal. Pellets are small enough to get picked up by the nozzle without any problems. Also, as anyone with a pellet stove knows, these stoves are a real nightmare to clean by hand because of the many parts involved that need to be cleaned on a regular basis - not only do you have an ashpan to empty, you have to clean a burnpot, air inlet chambers, heat exchanger tubes, etc. It used to take me over an hour to try and clean this with a brush and small shovel, and it always made a huge mesh. This vacuum has really simplified this chore and made it a breeze!

Customer Review: Great vacuum!
Summary: 5 Stars

We are very happy with the performance of this vacuum. It makes cleaning our pellet stove almost fun. We don't even empty the ash pan, just vacuum it up. The only thing I find a little funny is calling 82 decibels quiet.

Customer Review: It's OK for fine ash but anything bigger than a 1/2 inch nugget of wood.
Summary: 2 Stars

I've had the Cougar MU405 for about 2-3 years now and the vacuum works OK for fine ash. But a small nugget will either block up the hose or the entry to the vacuum requiring you to stop and unclog it. I have a double sided wood burning fireplace and this happens consistently even after taking significant amount of time to pull as many pieces out by hand as I can. Also, the metal flexible hose comes out of one end of the rubberized endings and can be a pain to get back in. I've had no problem with the motor thus far and it does a good job sucking up the ash. But the cheap connection of the hose and the continuous clogging keeps me from recommending the vacuum.
