Tools and Hardware Reviews of Electrolux Oxygen Canister Vacuum Cleaner, EL6988ECustomer Review: Great canister but has issues after a while. Summary: 3 Stars
I got an Electrolux Oxygen canister vacuum from Lowes back in 2003 at full retail ($400). At first, it was awesome. Pretty much just like my mom's grey and blue Electrolux as far as suction and mode of operation. It was super great on carpets as the head unit was light and maneuverable. The canister part was great too. The hose was long enough and attachments were all useable. The only con was the canister would always crash into the corners as we were vacuuming. Yes, I know there are some nuances with a canister, but carrying the canister around was tiresome. Also, the attachment caddy broke as a result of one such corner so now it's a carpet cleaning canister with attachments somewhere around the house.
After about 2 years, the carpet cleaning part (with rotating brush) would start to have connection issues. As a result of disconnecting the hose (with handle) from the carpet unit repeatedly (to use attachments), the dual prongs would burn/spark every now and then as I would push and pull on the carpet unit causing momentary disconnection. I thought it was minor enough not to warrant servicing and I guess I was partly in denial considering the cost and reputation of the vacuum.
Well, it did get worse and it got to the point where I couldn't even vacuum cause it would happen every pull and push. Went to an electolux authorized service guy and he told me that once it starts disconnecting, the unit needs replacing. (GRRR) So basically, I spent $200 a year on a vacuum before it started needed repairs. And at a cost of close to $200 for the carpet unit and hose, it wasn't cheap. So I decided to think about it and tried gerry rigging it myself. I sanded down the prongs, cleaned out the female ends and a few other minor and it worked great for about a year before I had to do the same "servicing" again.
So flash forward a few years and now "servicing" did nothing to stop the d/c. On top of that the rotating brush seized and cleaning it out only lasted 2 uses before seizing again, so we decided to spend the money on a lightweight upright that comes with a canister. One canister for upstairs and downstairs now.
The upright is great! The canister's not as good as the Oxygen of course so we'll definitely keep it. Who knows, maybe I'll fork over the $200 one day as it's a pretty good vacuum (less the issues). :)
Customer Review: Great for home with different floor surfaces. Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this vacuum on sale so I got a good price. I needed to replace an old upright...a basic $200 bag upright that lasted about 6 years. I wanted to switch to a canister because I have multiple levels in my home with different floor types, rug, tile, wood and stairs. I was getting to the point that I was tired of using the short hose attachment on my upright to clean 80% of my home and having it fall over all the time because of short reach. I love using a canister style now and find it so much lighter and easier to use than my old upright. Especially easy I like using my foot to turn it on, change from the floor attachment to the motorized carpet head and it drags behind easily. No, it's not the "perfect" machine, and there are even more expensive models out there, but that doesn't mean they work any better or worse. Considering I paid only a little over what a new upright would cost me, it was worth it. I would have liked to have gotten a motorized furniture head for the price, like the Oxygen3, but I see I can buy this later if I want to. I have 4 pets and it gets all the hair very nicely. My old vacuum just went across the surface leaving alot of deep dirt behind as I saw when I replaced my old carpets. So far I like this one very much and it is doing a good job. I no longer find it annoying to drag out a vacuum to clean something. I hope I get many years out of it. So far so good.
Customer Review: Great product Summary: 4 Stars
This vacuum is great! Would highly recommend it. Usually get a Hoover, but couldn't find any I liked at this time. Friends and family recommended the Electrolux.
Customer Review: Great vacuum with a small dust bag Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this vacuum because it was rated the best by Consumer Reports. (Immediately after I purchased it the next issue of Consumer Reports had a new review that rated a Kenmore vacuum equal to the Electrolux.) I was most concerned about having a vacuum that would pick up cat hair. My cat has especially soft down-like fur that sticks to everything. My previous vacuums had never cost more than about $70. But after getting this cat, my old vacuum would not pick up her fur. I had to get down and scrape it off the carpet with a shower squeegy. The electrolux has changed my life. It is amazing to see my carpets so free of cat hair. It is also nice to have the dusting brush and the crevice tool attached to the handle so it is easy to switch tools. The suction is really powerful even with the attachments. The one drawback is the small size of the dust bag. My previous vacuum had a much larger bag and also because it didn't pick up as much dirt and hair I could vacuum my house many times before needing to replace the bag. It is nice, however, to have the indicator light to let you know that the bag is full.
Customer Review: How is it possible that this vacuum gets such good reviews??? Summary: 2 Stars
Like many of the other reviewers, I also spent a lot of time choosing this vacuum. I chose it primarily because of its Consumer Reports rating and reviews from other owners. I also thought paying so much for a vacuum would mean it was a quality product. HUGE MISTAKE!
PROS: Decent suction and cleaning on regular carpet (but not as amazing as I was lead to believe). Lightweight. Nice looking.
CONS: Does NOT clean well on hard surfaces or very low pile carpet. Picks up dust and pet hair fairly well, but doesn't easily pick up "heavier" dirt which gets tracked in by kids and pets. Power brushroll strongly propells itself forward which seems cool at first, but you have to use strength to pull it back in the typical back and forth vacuuming motion which gets pretty tiring after any length of time and makes it difficult to maneuver in tight spaces. Very flimsy plastic construction. And switching between brushroll and floor tool for hard and carpeted surfaces is a real pain if you have multiple transistions between rooms.
I would not recommend this vacuum to anyone, especially not for the price.
