Tools and Hardware Reviews of Electrolux Oxygen Canister Vacuum Cleaner, EL6988E

Customer Review: Better little vacuum than many people claimed
Summary: 4 Stars

Before this purchase, I had a canister Electrolux for years. Bought it at a garage sale for $100 and it lasted forever. I debated whether or not to give the new Electrolux maker a try. And, I couldn't decide which reviews to believe, the bad ones or good ones. After looking at the reviews and features of other vacuums, I decided to go for it. I've only used it a few times, but it is great. Edge feature is nice and it has lots of power; sucks up all the dirt and more. It is easy to use and my house cleaner loved it compared to the old one. As any canister, it has its mobility issues, but not like some people claimed (they probably never had a canister vac). The head was a tiny bit higher than my old one, but it still fit nicely under things. The attachments seem fine and store easily. My only complaint was the cord from the head to the upright handle. It crosses the foot pedal, and so you have to be careful not to step on it while depressing the pedal to lower the handle. Not really a big deal though. This vacuum has some features just like cars do that some people may prefer over others, but in terms of its main function....works great. Definitely not sorry I bought it.

Customer Review: Buyer Beware
Summary: 3 Stars

I've had the Oxygen for about 4 years now. I spent a lot of time researching before making the purchase, and thought I'd made a great choice. We have all hardwood floors and two area rugs. Within the first few months the tool caddy broke off so I never really used any of the attachments. The power head for carpet is great and I felt it was doing a nice job of cleaning the carpets...however, just as the warranty expired, within weeks it seemed, the power head stopped working. I took it to a local repair shop and the connectors in the wand had blown (melted plastic, as other reviewers noted.) It cost around $110 to replace this part. The hardwood floor brush is just OK, it almost seemed like it was for a different vacuum...I found it kept falling off in the beginning and was a bit awkward to use. Anyway, long story short, the power head has stopped working again. This time I was told it's the electric hose...another $90. I'm on the fence between ditching the vacuum completely and purchasing something new like the Panasonic MC-CG885....or spending the money and hoping I get another couple of years out of the Oxygen. Hmmmmm. It is pretty good when it works, but beware of costly repairs. The guy at the vacuum shop said Electrolux are some of the worst vacuums, they are basically designed to break...fatally flawed... Somehow the pretty design and featured wooed me 4 years ago.

Customer Review: CR "Top Pick"
Summary: 4 Stars

The Electrolux EL 6988D Canister Vacuum was one of Consumer Reports top picks. (It was actually number 2 on the list). #1 was a Kenmore, which we refused to purchase as our last 3 Kenmore vacuums have essentially broken down within 3-4 year time frame. I was very tempted to buy the Dyson Animal, but it didn't "score" as high with CR.

So far, it is working well. It is lightweight, easy to carry around. Works well on carpets and furniture. Ok on our hardwood floors. (Better off using the attachment for these, which unfortunately doesn't clip onto the vacuum anywhere-- has to be stored separately.)

Minor Negatives:
-No dirt sensor.
-The power cord is shorter than expected.
-The swivel mechanism takes some energy to overcome to get the vacuum to move in the direction you want. This also makes it a little difficult to do the stairs.

So far, so good. We'll see how it pans out... our friends have the Dyson and describe their feelings of "love at first sight" with it. I don't know that I have the same feelings of love for the Electrolux but we're giving it a chance.

Customer Review: CR let me down
Summary: 3 Stars

My wife and I purchased this unit after conducting research, including the Consumer Reports website. Although after a few uses it does seem to function well, it is extremely hard to control. The head swivels in only one direction, making it very difficult to push the brush head in the other direction. Even when pushing it straight it feels like it wants to turn into the direction of the swivel. I am a fairly strong guy and yet I have to fight with it. It's awkward to maneuver around furniture or table legs.

On the positive side, it is quiet and it seems to work quite well. The cord retraction is fast and reliable. Thus far we have not had a single issue with it. With a properly swiveling brush, this would turn into a 5 star review.

Customer Review: Cheap Vacuum Cleaner: not true Electrolux
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this model because it was suppose to be so good at cleaning the air and trapping all the dust. It does a good job of that but it is hard to use. It pulls hard when you are trying to go back and forth. It started to "squeak" a month after I purchased it. Now 8 months later the power hose just separated from the nozzle. It's been hard trying to find someone willing to fix it! It is not a true Electrolux machine, even though the company that makes it has rights to use the name. For the money, there must be a better made vacuum cleaner.
