Tools and Hardware Reviews of Electrolux Oxygen Canister Vacuum Cleaner, EL6988E

Customer Review: Cleans great Hard to handle
Summary: 4 Stars

The machine works wonderfully and my wife feels it cleans much better than our previous Hoover wind tunnel. The handle is difficult to use moving to the right but that is a minor problem. Worth the money.

Customer Review: Complete piece of junk
Summary: 1 Stars

Total plastic. Don't breath on it or it will fall apart. I had mine for a week and the power head jammed. Took it back for full credit and bought something else. This is not an Eletrolux - it's a Eurika. Nothing but junk.

Customer Review: Cute little vacuum, works well
Summary: 4 Stars

We waited a long time to buy this, since reviews were so mixed. We've had it now about a month and we really like it.
A few comments: The bags are incredibly difficult to find and very expensive. By accident we orderered the clinic s bags (instead of the classic) and they seem to fit fine.
As to the noise: The vacuum is very quiet until you turn on the powerhead. Then it's just as loud as any other vacuum.
Our one complaint is the "twistiness" of the wand. It's difficult to make the powerhead go where you want it. It's difficult to steer. It was a good idea to be able to vacuum under things but it doesn't quite work.
It cleans very well. We have two huge long-haired dogs and this sucks up the hair very well (in addition to all the pin feathers of our bird). One of our carpets is solid dark brown and this cleans it well. It's also very easy to take the wand out of the cannister to clean high up or in other crevises.
The unit is very light and pretty small.

Customer Review: Decent vacuum; compact; not made like they used to be
Summary: 3 Stars

I'm rough on vacuums, and picky. This unit is good, but not great.

The good: Compact; reasonably good airflow; reasonably reliable (aside from nits below); on-off switches and cord rewind buttons are easy to get at, but flush with surface of vacuum so it's hard to turn them off and on accidentally. I like the light weight and easy maneuverability of this unit. Bags are easy enough to change. I like the canister style because I vacuum under things a lot, and I stick the bare wand (with or without a dusting attachment) behind and between furniture and walls. I also like to put on the dusting attachment and use the vacuum to suck up cobwebs. Uprights just can't touch this unit's ability to get into tight spots. Unlike some reviewers, I like the pressure-fit attachments (which lack extra buttons or latches to secure them). I just press hard when I put them on.

The bad: Plastic wand is rickety enough that I can feel it flex as I vacuum (yes, I push hard); rug beater chews up the edges and corners of rugs; cheap plastic hose tends to buckle; air leaks at various points, reducing suction; wheels sometimes come off the floor attachment, leading to under-sofa searches :-); cord is a bit short, but not atypical (I just hate plugging and unplugging vacuums).

Overall: What I like about this unit is that it works pretty well for something as light and compact as it is. I think Electrolux can do better, though, with the rug beater, easily bent hose, and rickety wand. A little Japanese-style incremental improvement to this product would go a long way.

If you have extra money, and want something light, maneuverable, and easy to move around - and are careful with the rug beater (esp. if you have carpet with a fringe or tassels) - it's not a bad choice.

Customer Review: Didn't Last Long
Summary: 2 Stars

I researched for a long time before deciding to purchase a vacuum. I went to the store to buy a Hoover, and came out with this Electrolux after my husband and a store employee convinced me it was a better vacuum. I got it because of the Electrolux name and the $100 rebate. Well, from the moment I put it together, I was sceptical of the way the pieces fit together. When you start the rug attachment, it takes off on you, which is kind of cool. It also cleans my carpets wonderfully! I don't like the way the bare floor and other attachments just sit on it instead of attaching securely. I also find that the bare floor attachment doesn't have much sucking power. I have also had trouble getting the rug attachment off. You have to step on something on it, and pull. For me, it isn't easy, plus it seems as though it will eventually just break off. A few months ago, the rug attachment wouldn't work and I discovered that a prong that is part of the handle connections was bent. Well a few weeks
ago, it snapped right off and I had to bring it to a repair facility. Luckily it is still under warranty. But I have only owned it for about 8 months and I only use it once a week. It shouldn't be broken already. They just don't make vacuums as sturdy as they used to be. We have a very old real Electrolux that was given to us, used, by my husbands parents and it still
works. Of course it is held together buy a shoestring and lots of duck tape! I also have trouble with the rug attachment sucking up things like the cover for the couch and then shutting off. It is very powerful so beware. I still haven't gotten my vacuum back from the repair place, and they told me it might take a while depending on when Electrolux sends them the parts to fix it. I also have trouble finding the bags for it. Our old Electrolux, had bags you could find really cheap at any store, but not this one. I would not recommend this vacuum.
