Tools and Hardware Reviews of Electrolux Oxygen Canister Vacuum Cleaner, EL6988EZXCustomer Review: A nice vacuum, but has a couple flaws Summary: 4 Stars
Previously we had a Sears Kenmore canister vacuum. It worked well but was heavy and loud; also the power head died after 6 six years. We bought the Electrolux 6988D because the price was comparable to an upper Kenmore and this Electrolux model was top-rated by Consumer Reports. We are very satisfied with the Electrolux canister- it is considerably smaller and quieter than the Kenmore and the performance is excellent on both carpet and hardwood floors. The beater bar has a lot of power on our berber carpet. Some may object to not having all the tools on board the canister, but by not having storage for the hard floor and furniture tools, the overall package that you have to move around is much more manuverable than our Kenmore (which stored all tools on cannister). There is a clip on the handle for the dust brush and crevice tools. An an industrial hygienist, I can testify the filtration system in this vacuum is really excellent for a home unit. It has a true HEPA filter which is easy to access, inspect and change. The bags are also very well designed in that they are very tough (rip proof), and there is a sliding cover to eliminate the explosion of dust that usually happens when a canister bag is removed from the housing. We've only had it about a month, but so far very pleased with the design, performance, and quality of construction.
Update after 1.5 years, lowered rating to 4 stars from 5.
The vacuum continues to clean very effectively.
Flaws:
The plastic clip that holds the wand to the powered head broke after several months. We contacted Elecrolux, and they sent a number of spare clips at no charge. However this circular clip is a weak link in the design. The clip falls off whenever the wand is twisted in a certain way, and several more clips have broken - we've replaced them.
My wife reports it is hard to vacuum under furniture and beds because the power head brush won't stay in contact with the carpet when the wand is held completely horizontal to the floor.
Customer Review: A vacuum that really sucks.....all the dirt and hairs Summary: 5 Stars
The vacuum is really easy to use. The large wheels move over door sills and changes in florring with no problem. The power brush lifts alot of trapped dirt from carpets. My husband and I we about to buy the vacuum a few months ago. The salesman at LOWES told us that Electrolux was changing the design but not the quality. We waited and saw the deal on Amazon and bought it for less the $200 after the rebate.
Customer Review: A very cheaply made machine Summary: 2 Stars
I have done tons of research on the web concerning vacuums and decided, based largely in part by it's rating in Consumer Reports to buy the Electrolux 6988D. Long story short... it's made in China and it shows. The canister was fairly well made, but the brush head was cheap plastic all around and made a sharp plastic on plastic noise when I put it on the Medium height setting. It also didn't really get deeply into the carpet. The head is too lightweight for that. So, I packed it up and sent it back. Thank God for Amazons return policy. I have now looked at Miele's (expensive and mostly plastic) and Riccar, which are OK and the high end machines are made with some metal and even a wooden rooler on one! I'm still not satisfied, so I have plans to go see the Sebo brand. With any of them I'll end up paying over $800 or more for a halfway decent canister. I was impressed with Riccars uprights that have this whole long hose thing going on. It works like a canister when you turn off the suction to the floor. Still high priced, and I don't want the akwardness of an upright. They really do a far better job on carpets, though, hands down.
Stay away from these Electrolux. They are all plastic and I could just see the potential problems. Electrolux EL 6988D Oxygen Canister Vacuum
Customer Review: Almost perfect Summary: 4 Stars
I did lots of research before purchasing this vacuum cleaner. This purchase was made to replace my Sears kenmore vacuum cleaner that I had for about 5 years. The suction is better than the Kenmore. It is smaller and quieter than the Kenmore - the only drawbacks are the slightly shorter extension cord and the on board attachments - they don't all fit with the vacuum cleaner.
Customer Review: Best Vacuum I Have Ever Owned Summary: 5 Stars
I bought my Electrolux EL6988D in 2005 and I love it. Without a doubt the best vacuum I have ever owned. It is quiet yet very powerful and one of the few that cleans fabric, wood floors and carpet exceptionally well. I use it weekly and no parts have broken or failed. It is very well built and makes vacuuming as fun as it can be. I recommend it VERY highly!
