Tools and Hardware Reviews of Emergency Fire StarterCustomer Review: A challenge to use Summary: 2 Stars
My experience with fire starting is limited, so this review is from more of a novice's perspective. Getting this fire starter to get a birds nest to light was a real challenge, I managed it once after 10-15 minutes of trying. I used certain dead leaves in the yard that strike up pretty easily with other flints but had a real time with this one. One problem I think is the action of striking, this tool has to be held further away from the tinder than the Ultimate Survival Technologies StrikeForce Fire Starter or the Swedish Firesteel - Scout Model , both of which can be placed on the tinder and the sparks can be sent directly in. This 'emergency fire starter' offers less sparks (lesser quality of flint?) and it has to be held at least a few inches from the tinder in order to strike it with the saw blade. Another problem is that you only get half the flint, the other half is glued and recessed in to the Magnesium. Being less experienced it took me more effort and more strikes to get the tinder started, only twice successfully once with a cotton ball (which felt like cheating) and I'm already 90% through the flint, it's almost worn flat. I recommend the other two firestarter since you get a lot more flint and it's in a format that allows close use with the tinder.
Customer Review: A cool toy, and a good addition to a nuclear apocalypse survival kit! Summary: 4 Stars
Well it is a bar of magnesium, which burns hot and ignites easily when scraped into fine shavings, and a rod of special alloy which produces sparks when scraped with steel. All conveniently packaged together.
To tell the truth, a cheap disposable lighter is much more practical and far easier to use, but this thing will work a thousand years after a nuclear war.
I estimate it would start just as many fires as a disposable lighter would on its gas supply, but it is certainly more fun and outdoorsy!
Customer Review: Almost Worthless Summary: 1 Stars
I don't understand all the glowing reviews. The little "saw" you get with this product can't produce anything more than tiny specks of magnesium. I was expecting easily-cut flakes. It's also small and pretty flimsy, and is attached by a tiny chain which means you have to separate the saw from the other piece to use the thing. It took me about fifty strikes to ignite a piece of tissue, and the saw blade cut into my forefinger in the process. There has to be something better out there.
Customer Review: Awesome Summary: 5 Stars
It's not the one Bear Grylls uses, but it's empowering to have fire at your command. It takes a little getting used to but with the right kindling you'll have no problem making fires. I find that dryer lint works everytime with this combo.
Customer Review: Awesome firesteel! Summary: 5 Stars
I tested this product and the following product at the same time, and they produced the same results:
http://www.amazon.com/Swedish-Firesteel-Model-Black-Handle/dp/B0013L2DKU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1298100054&sr=1-1
It took me 5 consecutive strikes on my first try EVER with this item to light a ripped up 2 inch square of paper towel ablaze, and that was only because i didn't have the angle right the first 4 strikes. That being said, anyone who left a bad review for this item is an idiot. It's really not even necessary to read the instructions if you have an elementary knowledge of physics, i.e: Understanding that "just enough" force to create a spark is all that is necessary, and the correct angle to hold the striker is the only angle out of the two choices that would create a spark. It's so unbelievably simple. It's hard to believe that anyone could have trouble using this firesteel. Other than that, the product is very well made. I can envision many thousands of fires being made from this one single firesteel. I highly recommend this for any application.
