I have the Walmart(Coleman) version of the magnesium fire starter. Its great and reliable, however if you use the non-serrated edge of the striker on the flint and the serrated edge against your finger it will eventually begin to cut into you will be very irritating. I recomend a smaller blade that you have designated for this purpose as the blade of the knife will start to chip and wear down. hope this helps.Customer Review: Fire Starter

Harder to use than I thought. I think more magnesium shavings need to be made for the flint to actually spark up a fire. Figured it out after almost demolishing the entire flint, may have to get another ha. Better to have than not to have, but please people, practice if you do not know how to use already.
