Tools and Hardware Reviews of Energizer TUF2DPE Hard Case Pro LED Flashlight

Customer Review: Bunny vs Billy
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a matchup between the Energizer Hard Case Professional 2-D Cell LED flashlight ("Bunny") vs. the Maglite Second Generation 2-D Cell LED flashlight ("Billy" as in billy club :-)). If you want a superbright, menacing skull-cracker, you can stop reading right now: Billy beats Bunny into the ground for sure. If you are interested in a bright, friendly tool, read on.

(a) Weight (with batteries)

Billy: 24 ounces

Bunny: 30 ounces

(b) Shape

Billy: Classic cylindrical body with cylindrical head. Easily rolls off a table or bench and goes ker-plop.

Bunny: Ergonomic rectangular. Shaped like a small excercise weight. Rectangular head. Rectangular butt. Molded finger grips in central handle. Doesn't roll. Butt has molded loop for attaching a lanyard.

(b) Size

Billy: Overall length: 10-1/4 in. Head diameter: 2-1/4 in. Barrel diameter: 1-1/2 in.

Bunny: Overall length: 10-1/4 in. Head: 3-5/8 in. X 3-5/8 in. Butt: 2-3/4 in. X 2-3/4 in.

(c) Materials

Billy: Aluminum body and head with plastic lens and rubber cover over switch; O-ring seals. No bumper guards at all. Classic skull-cracker. Aluminum is rugged, but will pick up dings, dents, gouges, and burrs when dropped on hard, rough surfaces.

Bunny: ABS plastic and rubber body and head with plastic lens and rubber cover over switch; O-ring seals. Stainless sheet-metal plates on side of head, but mainly cosmetic. Heavy rubber bumper guards over lens and butt. Reduced leverage and rubber bumper make for a lousy skull-cracker, but a good light exercise weight.

(d) Switch

Billy: Positive click on/off on barrel near head. Best design around: press lightly and hold for momentary on; press all the way and release for continuous on; press all the way again and release to turn off.

Bunny: Positive click on/off on head. Press all the way and release for continuous on; can then press lightly and hold for momentary off; press all the way again and release to turn off.

(e) Grip

Billy: Good balance. Thumb rests naturally on switch. Part of barrel is lightly knurled. Cylindrical body allows easy change between standard and palm-up police grip.

Bunny: Good balance. Thumb rests naturally on switch. Molded finger grooves primarily for standard grip. Uncomfortable for police grip.

(f) Battery Change

Billy: Unscrew tailcap and pop in two D-Cells. Tailcap has strong coil spring electrical contact. Need to push and twist.

Bunny: Unscrew tailcap and pop in two D-Cells. Tailcap has strong coil spring electrical contact. Need to push and twist. The large, rectangular, rubber-covered tailcap of Bunny is much easier to turn than the small, round, milled aluminum tailcap of Billy.

Note: In case of battery leakage, batteries often swell and get stuck in Billy, and the tailcap gets chemically fused to the barrel and becomes near impossible to remove without damaging the unit: sometimes a pair of vise-grips is needed. The plastic material of Bunny is more corrosion resistant, and the inside of the battery chamber is ridged to allow space for leaking electrolyte. As noted above, the Bunny tailcap affords a good grip.

(g) Optics

Billy: Neutral white color. Uniform beam with center hotspot and even circular spill. Variable focus. Note: The Billy focus is mainly to keep a focussed hotspot at any distance. If you try to use it to give a diffuse pattern at closer distances, you get the notorious black hole in the middle.

Bunny: Neutral white color. Uniform beam with center hotspot and even circular spill. Fixed focus.

Note: Billy beats Bunny flat out in brightness. I use a mailbox 50 ft away and a stop sign 500 ft away as test targets. Both have at least a 500 ft throw with a 50 ft spill, but Bunny goes well beyond, especially with the focus capability (don't have a known reference distance beyond 500 ft). I also have a 3-D Cell first generation LED Maglite; it's dimmer than Billy but still much brighter than Bunny (don't have a 2-D Cell first generation LED Maglite for comparision)

(h) Special Note for Unpacking Bunny. The light comes strapped to a tough, heavy gauge sheet of plastic. The straps are industrial cable ties. For cutting the ties, scissors, utility knives, and razor blades don't work well and can be dangerous. The *proper tool* is a pair of diagonal wire cutters ("dikes"). You need a medium size pair (~6"). If you do electrical work, you will have one. If you don't, borrow one. It's not a general purpose tool, and it's silly to buy a pair just to unpack a flashlight.

Batteries are included. Each battery is sealed in a tough plastic compartment, and it's not apparent how to remove it. Don't use a utility knife or razor blade to cut through the compartment!! Very dangerous. If you look carefully at the back of the package, the back of the compartment has an icon of what appears to be a pair of pliers and the word "CUT". These symbols are hard to see, because they are molded black-on-black. The icon doesn't refer to pliers but to dikes. Again, if you don't do electrical work, you won't recognize it. It's also not apparent what you actually are supposed to cut. Close inspection shows the icon is pointing to a small plastic nub. You cut off the plastic nub and then use a small screwdriver to push a plastic tab through a slot to open the battery compartment and release the battery. The nub comes shooting out when you snip it, so cup one hand over the nub and dikes before you snip to keep the nub from whacking you (especially in the eye). The tip of the tab is sharp once you snip the nub off; don't press on it with a finger.
