Tools and Hardware Reviews of Estwing E24A Sportsman's Hatchet Metal HandleCustomer Review: Awesome Summary: 5 Stars
I friggin love this hatchet. It's the classic sportsman hatchet. Well designed with perfect balance and curvature. Very durable, lightweight, good grip. It's very solid. Doesn't vibrate at all when you chop stuff up with it. =) Price is great! And it's made in the good ol' USA. Buy it!
Customer Review: Awesome hand held personal safety weapon! Summary: 5 Stars
I recently bought this axe and I have to admit, I LOVE IT. I recommend sharpenning the axe prior to use, the blade is fairly dull from the factory. Additionally, I personally like to grease my axe prior to use as to avoid skull fragments from sticking to the blade. The axe feels great because of the excellent leather grip. In addition to that, the weight is perfect for striking in close quarter combat or it can also be used as an artillary weapon for hitting targets from ten feet and beyond.
Customer Review: Best hatchet I've found Summary: 5 Stars
I was given one of these for my 12th birthday. It's still in use - a little worse for wear, but still getting the job done.
A typical hatchet has a far wider head, which is necessary for the wooden or fiberglass handle. Not this one - the head and handle are a solid piece of steel, allowing them to be far narrower than a typical hatchet, allowing it to cut much deeper with every strike.
It's balanced far better than most, and the handle has always felt like it was custom made for my hand, from age 12 to 29.
The bevel in the edge is a little mismatched - you won't notice it while you're using it. The hatchet will need to be sharpened regularly; if the mismatch bothers you, it will be gone after you sharpen it a few times. One of the reviews suggested that if you were familiar with finely crafted woodworking tools, you would be disappointed with the edge and the bevel. I would suggest that you wouldn't swing a finely crafted woodworking tool as hard as you could at a dirty log, at least not if you expected it to remain a finely crafted tool. It's an AXE. It's purpose is to make firewood, not cabinetry, and it's extremely well suited for its intended purpose.
Customer Review: Camping must! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this axe for camping. It works really well! I like the solid steel shank design. With a good sharpener this axe will last a lifetime. Reminds me of the book "Hatchet" for those of you that read it when you were young. If I was lost in the woods, this is the tool I would want.
Customer Review: Chop Chop Summary: 5 Stars
This camp axe is pretty awesome... the axe itself is made in the U.S. and the sheath is made in Haiti. The weight and balance of the axe make quick work of pretty much anything you want to cut without wearing you out. It may weigh your pack down a little bit more than a cheaper axe but its definately worth it. The leather wrapped handle is a work of art and the whole product is well constructed to last. You can definately double this as a hammer to drive stakes for your tent or anything else. The blade comes out decently sharp; more than sharp enough to cut through wood with ease. If your anything like me though your going to want to make this sucker as sharp as you can so do yourself a favor and buy a sharpening stone or something of the like. I will be taking this axe with me everywhere I go; kudos to the designer.
