Tools and Hardware Reviews of Eureka 4870DT Upright VacuumCustomer Review: A Heavy Load Summary: 3 Stars
This vacuum has all the features that are handy and does a great job of cleaning, but the only problem I've incurred is the weight of the vacuum. It's easy when you push the vacuum away from you while on a carpet, but pulling it back is a strain on my back as the machine wants to go the other way and you're pulling 21 pounds of machine towards you.
Customer Review: A Meaner Cleaner Summary: 5 Stars
I've already posted a review a few weeks ago, so I just wanted to give an update. I've only used my vacuum cleaner for 1 month and I've already filled up a bag full of dust! Wow. And I don't even have a big house--maybe 1,000 sq. ft. of carpet, and 500 sq. ft. of hard floors at the most. With my last vacuum cleaner, I'd probably go through 1 bag a year at most. But with this, I've already filled up a bag in just one month! That tells you something about how well this thing works. It also means that for the past several years, all sorts of dirt and dust have been just sitting there inbedded in my carpet for about 10 years, untouched by my el cheapo Eureka vacuum cleaners of the years past. Since I live in a two-story with a carpeted basement, it's been really difficult carrying this thing up and down the stairs--it's quite heavy. But in all, I'm extremely satisfied with this vacuum cleaner.
Customer Review: A REAL Vacuum Cleaner for Great Price! Summary: 5 Stars
All my life, I've used the cheap vacuum cleaners you buy from the local discount stores. I thought, "what's the difference? A vacuum cleaner is a vacuum cleaner, right?" Wrong. I've been using a $60 Eureka Boss that has only 10 amps for the past several years. I bought it because it was very light and it had a lot of amps for the price. However, my wife noticed that it wasn't really picking anything up. She would do her "lint brush test"--you know, the masking tape lint roller thingy--on the carpet after vacuuming and she would always be disappointed at the results. So, we began shopping for a new vacuum. After reading reviews, I decided to get the Eureka 4870DT and I'm glad that I did. This vacuum feels, looks, and sounds 100 times better than my old one. This one feels like it's QUALITY built. For starters, it doesn't roar like an airplane like my old one. Instead, this one sounds more like a deep hum. In another words, it's not annoyingly loud like most vacuums. I actually ENJOY vacuuming with this, can you believe it? And I'm a guy. Also, everything feels sturdy... not cheap plasticky like my old Eureka. All the accessories and hoses stay in place. I like how the hose is always attached; you don't have to fumble with trying to attach it to the base. Instead you just turn the knob to "hose" and you're ready to go. How about the sucking power, you ask? It's amazing... my wife did her "lint brush test" after using this and she was IMPRESSED! I couldn't believe it either... the lint brush was virtually lint-LESS! I also bought a washable HEPA filter and about 3 years worth of vacuum bags along with this, so I'm all set. If you're going to spend even a measley $60 for a vacuum, don't make the same mistake I did... just buy this vacuum and think of it as an investment rather than an expense. I was going to save up to buy the $$$ Dyson DC-07; instead, I'm glad I went for this for far less money. Dyson might be better, but I can say for sure that we're very pleased with this vacuum. The only thing I don't like about this vacuum is that it is kind of hard to step down on the latch that releases the vacuum. Also, it does take some oomph to switch the lever to the "hard floors" setting from the "carpet" setting. It's heavier than my old vacuum so it might be more difficult to carry up and down the stairs. These problems are minor considering the preformance and price.
Customer Review: A Real Workhorse, and the Best Vacuum $ for $. Summary: 5 Stars
I have owned this vacuum model for more than a year based on the review of a leading consumer mag. Prior to purchase, I had owned a couple Sears canister models. The suction is outstanding, and changeover from floor mode to handheld tools is pretty easy. While certain pieces of both Sears models broke at some point (bad design? flimsy construction?), everything is still solid on my Eureka. Bag changes are pretty painless. The 'headlight' isn't very bright, but this has not been a problem for me to date, since daylight or house lighting are adequate. I have a two story house, and this model is pretty hefty, but good handle locations make lifting and carrying OK. The foot release is a bit stiff, and the on/off switch seems less than ideally placed on the front of the machine, but this is somewhat nitpicky. All-in-all, a solid vacuum cleaner for the money.
Customer Review: A Time Consuming Vacuum Summary: 2 Stars
With this vacuum, it takes me 4x longer to vacuum than with my old vacuum. It doesn't vacuum edges or directly infront-flesh up to a dresser. You must use the on board attachment by unhooking it, switching the air flow from floor to attachment, then you must use the attachment at the correct angle to suck the dirt. In my hallways and dining room I have area rugs on top of hardfloors. If the vacuum is on part hardfloor and part area rug, it will not suck up the dirt on the edge of the rug nor the hardfloor. If you want to go from rug to hardfloor, you must lean over and manually switch from carpet to hardfloor. I tried keeping the switch on carpet while vacuuming hardfloors and it shoots all the hardfloor dirt behind it. In my hallway the hardfloor between the wall and area rug is narrower than the vacuum; with both settings on hard floor, it does not suck up the dirt because part of the vacuum is still on the area rug, thus I must lift up the area rug, vacuum, and replace the rug, or I use the on board attachments to vacuum the edges. I am most annoyed when vacuuming the kitchen. When both settings are switched to hard floor, it doesn't vacuum the cherrios by the baseboards, the dirt just under the edge of the fridge and stove. When I switch to the on board attachments, I can't seem to hold it at the correct angle to get the dirt at the edge of the fridge--I am better off flicking it out with my fingers.
So in comparision to my 10 year old Kenmore that vacuums the edges, rugs, hardfloor and everything in between on one setting, I am very disappointed with the Eureka. I will continue using the Kenmore and leave the new vacuum in the basement to use on occasion.
A few other side notes: It is very heavy, it doesn't tilt far enough for me to vacumm under the dining room table. It does vacuum upholstery and stairs well with the onboard attachments.
