Tools and Hardware Reviews of Eureka 4870DT Upright VacuumCustomer Review: Decent vacuum for the money Summary: 4 Stars
I've owned this vacuum for over a year and am generally happy with its performance. The suction remains fairly constant even when the bag is almost full. It's not overly heavy and is fairly easy to transport up and down stairs. However, I do have a few gripes about the vacuum that would prevent me from ever purchasing this particular model again. The attachments do not always stay snapped into place and I'm constantly stopping in the middle of my cleaning to return them to their holders. The other problem is with the peddle that drops the vacuum handle. It has always been very difficult to press and release the vacuum. After 8 months of operation, the peddle finally snapped off (resulting in a vacuum that will not stay locked in the upright position during storage or if you must stop in the middle of vacuuming to move something). I had assummed that since I was within the one year warranty that Eureka would pay to have this fixed. Although it only cost me $9, I felt that a defect in the vacuum resulted in the peddle breaking and that I should not have been held accountable, especially since my once a week vacuuming wouldn't count as industrial use by any stretch of the imagination. The Eureka repairman indicated that this was not the first peddle on this particular Eureka model he's ever replaced, and I fully anticipate mine snapping off again despite every conscious effort to avoid the problem. For this reason, I probably won't bother replacing the peddle if it breaks again. I figure I will have gotten my money's worth and maybe finally buy that Dison I've been eyeing.
Customer Review: Design flaw - belt breakage Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased this vacuum more than a year ago, and it has one serious design flaw, and I'm now searching for a replacement.
There is a lever on the base which is supposed to disengage the brush when you want to vacuum a hardwood floor or use the hose and vacuum stationary. The lever doesn't really get the roller disengaged from the belt unless you really push it hard to one side and you feel it click into place. In the half-engaged position that it tends to get into, the belt gets worn down by friction and breaks. If you're the only one using the vacuum, then you might be able to be careful enough to avoid this. In my family, that hasn't happened.
To see how common this problem is search within the reviews of this product for the word "belt".
Eureka definitely knows about this problem, but they don't seem to have done anything about it, and they've had time to fix it in a new rev of the vacuum.
I called to tell them the belt broke a short time after my purchase; they sent me a new one free (just once) and told me to be very careful to have the brush lever fully disengaged or fully engaged. I immediately bought a second belt and am now on my third or fourth, I can't remember. I found only one shop in the area that carries the "R" belt; it's otherwise very hard to find.
I don't know if this is just a problem with this one model or it happens on other Eurekas as well. I'm reluctant now to buy another Eureka at all.
Customer Review: Did my research...and am VERY happy with my choice.. Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this vacuum after doing my research. Actually, I was going to throw in the towel and just buy "a other name brand" because I had borrowed my neighbor's....but was just not thrilled spending "alot more money". I am so happy I didn't. This is a great vacuum...cleans so well that you can hear it picking up the dirt out of the rugs. The only problem I had was that the belt broke the first time I used it (completely my fault) HOWEVER....I didn't know it was broke and it made the vacuum IMPOSSIBLE to push as it was so heavy. I read all of the reviews on it being heavy so I just thought it was me. Nope.... So my only suggestion is that if you feel it is absolutely too heavy...check the belt!Otherwise...save your "money"...and get this...it is worth it!
Customer Review: Disappointed in Eureka Summary: 1 Stars
I just purchased this vacuum after doing a lot of research and reading all of the positive reviews. After assembling the vacuum I realized the switch to alternate between carpet and hard floors didn't work. The switch is supposed to stop/start the roller brush from spinning, but the switch wouldn't stay in the off (hard floor) position. Like other reviews stated, the pedal to recline the machine is super stiff and hard to push. I am returning the machine because of the defect and don't plan to purchase another one because I am disappointed with the overall look of the machine. It does not look very durable and I question whether or not it would hold up over the years.
Customer Review: Disappointing cleaner Summary: 1 Stars
I don't think my vacuum ever worked correctly. The cleaner never recognized the difference between hard floors and carpet. Additionally, I purchased my cleaner on Dec 16 2002 and last night, Jan 13, 2004, the on/off switch broke. It will no longer turn off and the warranty just ran out.
