Tools and Hardware Reviews of Eureka 4870DT Upright Vacuum

Customer Review: EUREKA VACUUM 4870DT
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this vacuum to overcome the problem my wife had with several large long shag carpets with our ORECK vacuum. This EUREKA monster sucks like a hurracane. It lowers to a level that does an excellent job on our wood floors, same with short pile carpet and a surper job with the long shag. It's heavy and requires me to do the vacuuming of the shag, otherwise, the Mrs. does just fine.

Customer Review: Eureka
Summary: 4 Stars

Consumer reports has this atop the class of affordable vacuums. It performs well - only concern is the plastic foot-release that is quite stubborn sometimes. The design needs to be worked on for future models. Otherwise, mechanically sound and oh, by the way - it sucks! (That's a good thing!)

Customer Review: Eureka - I have found it!
Summary: 5 Stars

What are you really looking for when buying a new vacuum? Price, features, performance, easiness of use? All of these points were well balanced when Eureka made the 4870DT.

For myself, I wanted an upright with a HEPA filtration system, a hose that didn't have to be manually attached for every use and a brush roller that could be turned off when used on bare floors or when using the hose attachments. Anything else was just an extra and that I found. Reasonably priced, powerful suction and noise level was less than expected. With the HEPA filtration, I no longer have dusty exhaust air blowing out where I've just cleaned. Regarding the often reported handle release difficulty, I found it to be minor by just applying a little more pressure on the outer edge of the switch. And yes, the weight (21 pounds) could be a challenge if you have back problems or difficulty with lifting. Something to consider if you live in a split-level residence. OVERALL, without nit-picking, this vacuum should serve most buyers quite well, considering its intended use.

And how do you know if it's a good buy? Read reviews in Consumer Reports and by owners of the product. I usually weigh customer reviews a little more heavily to get the feel of product performance. CR's top rated Hoover was clearly diminished by customer reviews. That's why I bought the Eureka 4870DT. I highly recommend it!!

Customer Review: Eureka 4870 Vacuum
Summary: 4 Stars

Oct. 2005 review: Based on other's reviews, I decided to get the Eureka 4870 to replace my old vacuum. It was easy to put together. Wow! Was it powerful. I had to replace the bag after only one thorough vacuuming of my three-level house, which means my old vacuum must have been missing a lot. The hose/attachment feature works well. My only disappointment has been its bare floor performance. I can't seem to get the "brush" off to properly vacuum the bare floors. I will need to call their 800 number to see if I'm overlooking a button or if perhaps it's just stuck. Although heavy, its self-propelled feature makes it easy to operator.

Overall, I'm happy with this model because you get good performance at a reasonable price. If it weren't for the bare floor issue, I would have given it 5 stars.

*** Update ***
March 2007 update: I still like the cleaning power of this vacuum, but I HATE bringing it up/down a level. The hose is easy to turn on/use. Although I sometimes forget to switch the knob back to "floor" and vacuum an entire room w/o the correct suction. I can't seem to keep the small brush attachment in the base slot, but this is a minor annoyance. Because it's so heavy, I've recently considered purchasing another model to leave downstairs and just keep this one upstairs.

Customer Review: Eureka 4870DT - A good vacuum
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a great vacuum. It performs well on both floors and carpets. It's easy to use the attachments (especially since they are all located on the vacuum body). It may be a little loud for some, but it has great suction. It also has an assist for the forward movement; it does require a bit of extra pull on the return. Be sure to put your carpet setting possible one notch higher than yuo think.
