Tools and Hardware Reviews of Eureka 4870DT Upright VacuumCustomer Review: this is a great upright vacuum Summary: 5 Stars
I have never wrote a review before but after opening the box and plugging it in I couldn't be happier with this vacuum. This vacuum really cleans and picks up most anything on the first pass. I don't do much vacuuming but with this unit I just might start if I can get it away from my wife.
Customer Review: unpleasant odor. Summary: 1 Stars
vacuum emits an unpleasnt oder of vomit when running. unable to use.
Customer Review: very happy with this vacuum Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this vacuum because Consumer Reports gave it a Best Buy rating both last year and in the July 2004 issue. Compared to my old Eureka this new one feels almost like it is self-propelled.Love the HEPA filter and that it has a bag. Very good vacuum strength. My only quibble is that I wish the upper power cord retainer was higher up on the handle like my old Eureka instead of down on the body. I like to let out more cord as I vacuum instead of uncoiling the entire power cord and it is not as convenient to do with the 4870 because I have to lean down.

I like this vacuum for carpeting. Having two large dogs, I find it's terrific vacuuming the dirt tracked in and the dog hair. I use it two or three times each week.
I appreciate that it's not to noisy to use. I bought my son a bissel vacuum and he has to use ear protection because it's so loud (It costs about the same as the Eureka). This Eureka is much easier on the ears.
I do find that the handle release (required for brush activation)is very difficult to depress, and since it's plastic I am sure it will be the first to break on this machine. My adult son also found it difficult to depress.
The switch from carpet to floors is also difficult to use. You have to stop the machine to flip the switch (which is on the base of the unit)with fingers. It's not convienent if you have a combination of bare floors and carpeting. I found my previous Sharp and Panasonics (2+ times the price of the Eureka) were much more efficient in the transition from carpet to bare floor and use of tools.
Having on board hose and tools is great concept, but this hose is very short and comes from the base of the machine. Because it's at the base, it's already too short to use the duster attachment on tables. To dust my computer table, I had to place the vacuum on a tall chair so the hose outlet was closer to table height. It was a hassle. The attachment tubes extend adequately for use on ceiling cobwebs.
Disposable replacement filters are $15.00 each, however a washable unit is available online at Southside Vacuum Company for $29.99 + $4.90 shipping ($15.00 cheaper that what is available through Amazon.com's Allergy Be Gone). Bags are less expensive at the above retailer too. Filter change is recommended after only a few bag changes. The vacuum does a great job on filtering dust and preventing it from entering the air during use. A must for asthma sufferers.
I would buy this vacuum again because for the price, suction ability, and hepa filter action. It's a good buy despite the inconvienences. (I paid $113.00 by using Amazon's kitchen purchase discount of $25.00 and the free shipping)
Customer Review: works great but looks a little akward Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this with $114.99 ($139.99 with $25 promotion) with free shipping, compared to about $150 at lowes. Price is great! Works fine too. We owned a high end Kenmore from Sears before, so this one can only win on price. My wife complaints that it's not as quiet, as slim, as powerful, etc. as her previous toy. I am OK with it. It's a little hard to put it to the workign position from the vertical position though.
