Tools and Hardware Reviews of Eureka 4870DT Upright Vacuum

Customer Review: Buy it
Summary: 5 Stars

I looked far and wide for a vacuum cleaner. My old vacuum was a Eureka and it lasted for 18 years. I had an open mind though, and I kept hearing about how great Hoover was. I compared prices and read reviews. I took a chance and got another Eureka. This vacuum is awesome. Its quiet and powerful. I bought new carpet and I've got small pieces of the new fiber that typically comes off new carpet. No problem with this 4870. I highly recommend it !

Customer Review: Can A Vacuum REALLY Make a Man Happy?
Summary: 5 Stars

I've read every single review here and on the internet before purchasing this vacuum. What could possess a poor college student into spending this much money on a vacuum? My main reason is simple. I always want the best. And I firmly believe that this is the BEST vacuum that I've ever encountered in my entire lifetime bar none.

In comparison, I've used your run-of-the-mill Hoover, Bissell, and other Eureka models both bagless and with a bag. On top of that, I've used a Miele cannister vacuum, and a professional line vacuum that cost a few hundred dollars in a hotel. The Eureka 4870DT is not the best in every category, but at least the second best if not best in most categories.

Power - Best
Quietness - Second Best compared to the Miele.
Logical Design - Best.
Air Filter (so dust doesn't reach the air) - Best
On board attachments - Best
Ease of changing bag - Best, Tied with many

Of course there is always the bad with the good. But the bad is quite manageable. The biggest fault is that this vacuum weighs a good amount. Average to slightly heavier than average for its size. My assumption is that the motor is much bigger on this model than others. The only other really negative thing I can think of is the maintanance cost of this vacuum. Bags are hard to find and costly, HEPA filters are even more expensive.

Conclusion...
I do not feel immasculated at all owning this vacuum. In fact, I feel quite empowered by this tool of cleanliness. It's the quietest upright vacuum I've ever used by far. You actually feel the power of the vacuum as it glides over your floor. The extremely high RPM of the brushes push your vacuum forward while the suction of the vacuum actually makes you feel like you're tugging on your carpet. It's a sensation I've never quite experienced before. Bottom line, your carpets LOOK cleaner. And in the process, you enjoy vacuuming. Strange.

Customer Review: Challenging Vacuume
Summary: 2 Stars

I feel like vacuuming should be relaxing. I would never consider it fun, but it shouldn't be the most dreadful thing you do each week.
The pros: Great price, cleans well on carpet, tile, and linolium. Wonderful vacuume for a very strong person with no back issues.
Cons: Absolutely the heaviest feeling vacuume I've ever used. I'm not sure if it's my size (5'3", little), but after five minutes, this vacuume begins to feel very awkward and difficult to maneuver. Initially, the machine will seem to propel itself forward. For a reason unknown to me, this ends after a few minutes, and the vacuume becomes very heavy and difficult to push. It starts to fight against you for each back and forth motion attempted. I've tried the different height levels on carpet but seem to have the same problem every time. On tile flooring, the machine rolls smoothly and does a good job. The attachments are ridiculously difficult to click back in to the unit for storage. The foot pedal to recline the unit for use is made so my full weight is needed for release. The stretch hose is very short. If the extension tubes are used to clean corners or ceilings, the short stretch hose will either cause the vacuume to tip over, or will disconnect from the extension tubes.
If all that needs to be done is cleaning a large area of flooring, and you are a quite muscular, this may be the most economical choice. For others, I would definely suggest something else.

Customer Review: Cleans Acres of Carpet and Mile after Mile of Tile
Summary: 5 Stars

I'll admit that I'm one of the worst when it comes to sweeping the floor with a broom. No matter how hard I try, there always seems to be some elusive dustbunny that resists all efforts to corral it in the dustpan. So, when my wife and I went shopping for a vacuum cleaner, we zeroed in on models that were capable of vacuuming the acres of wall-to-wall carpeting in our home and sweeping the tile and vinyl that make up the rest of our floors. A HEPA filter and disposable dust bags were necessities because of her allergies (your allergist will tell you that bagless cleaners are an exercise in futility unless you take the cleaner completely out of the house and shut the door behind you when emptying the dirt container).

After we pared down the list, we consulted the leading consumer reporting magazine and bought the highest rated model we could afford. And that's how we came to own this cleaner.

I vaguely remember reading that Eureka's engineers cobbled together the prototype for The Boss SmartVac series by actually mounting a classic "torpedo" canister cleaner and its motorized carpet brush on a wheeled rig with a handle. Once they determined that it COULD be done, they refined the design into a unit that really does combine the suction power of a canister with the carpet cleaning ability and easy mobility of an upright, with the added convenience of having the cleaning tools along for the ride. You can see the "canister cleaner on wheels" inspiration in the larger photo here on Amazon.com.

In operation, the cleaner is surprisingly quiet, producing a breathy drone that still permits conversation. Though not self-propelled, the cleaner's brush roller turns so rapidly, it almost propels the cleaner for you. A headlight helps you spot obstacles in the cleaner's path.

The 15-inch wide cleaning path shortens your vacuuming time and offers right-up-to-the-baseboard edge cleaning ability. For more stubborn debris, you can put together the extension wand and attach the crevice tool. The upholstery tool does an admirable job on carpeting under, say, a bed that can't be moved. One notable feature: When the handle is returned to the fully upright position, as when cleaning with tools, the brush roller stops, preventing worn spots on your carpet. A brush roller switch lets you turn off the brush roller at other times for sweeping bare floors.

A few engineering features are worth mentioning. The cleaner's motor is completely isolated from the suction path and protected by its own final stage filter, meaning small hard objects like coins, nutshells and buttons won't damage the fan blades or jam the motor. The micron filtration dust bag, motor filter and HEPA filter equal 3 stages of filtration before the air is expelled. The brush roller belt follows a twist-free path, extending its life and reducing the risk of belt breakage. Should debris actually clog the suction path, all of the hoses can be detached and cleared. If a particularly nasty item has damaged the hose or pipe, the parts can be easily replaced by the consumer.

After vacuuming the carpet in the master bedroom and some of the living room, we already noticed a measurable level of dirt in the first bag, an indication of the dirt left behind by our aging Hoover Decade 80 upright. We expect bags in the future to last a tad longer.

If you expect to use the cleaner a lot, you can upgrade the disposable HEPA filter to a washable CleanStream HEPA filter. Details are at www.cleanstreamfilters.com.

Customer Review: Cleans Very Well!
Summary: 4 Stars

This vac really diggs deep into the carpet. The only problem was the toggle to release the handle to vacuum. You have to press very hard and it's made of plastic. I have a concern that it might break. I have been using it for a year and a half without problems. A good buy.
