Tools and Hardware Reviews of Eureka Boss Smart-Vac Upright HEPA Vacuum Cleaner, 4870MZCustomer Review: Best vacuum I've ever owned! Summary: 5 Stars
I have been searching for a powerful budget vacuum for quite some time. We used to have a Rainbow, (not a budget vacuum) which I hated from day one. Too heavy, too $$, and disposal of the stinky wet dog hair was gross. After reading many reviews on several different brands, I decided on the Eureka 4870mz. WOW, does this thing work great! It's self propelled, which I didn't even know about until I fired it up, and it took me for a walk, but the best thing is the amazing suction. I have a wood stove, and after cleaning out the ashes, I tend to have ash dust all over everything for 10 feet. This vacuum works great cleaning it up, and doesn't blow it around first, like some of the bagless models do. I purposely looked for a model with a bag, as my experience with a much higher priced Dirt Devil bagless, was less than great. The filter needed to be cleaned after every use, or it didn't work worth beans...and I had a rather small house, without pets at the time.
If I had to pick it apart, I would say it can be a bit heavy, and the foot control can be stiff. The cord is good and long, and I don't mind that it doesn't have auto wind, since they never seem to last anyhow. My power paw works great too.
Overall, this is the best vacuum I've ever owned, and the price makes it an even better deal. I highly recommend the Eureka 4870.
Customer Review: Best we've had Summary: 5 Stars
Well after half a dozen uses I can definitely say this is the best performing vacuum we've ever owned. The price is right and the thing picks up everything in sight. It is heavier than most other vacuums, but if the brushes are set to the appropriate height, vacuuming really isn't that difficult, it virtually glides along. Vacuums we've had in the past have struggled to pick up dog hair from upholstery, not the Eureka 4870MZ Boss.
I spent a long time researching vacuums and I'm glad I did, for the money you won't find a better vacuum anywhere.
Customer Review: Better than I expected! Summary: 5 Stars
**Update to the below review** It is two years later and my vacuum cleaner is still working great and I still love it! The power paw attachment is great for vacuuming the stairs - we have two sets and it is easier to use the power paw than balance my canister vac on the stairs.
My 12 yr old Sharp upright gave up the ghost so I needed a new upright for upstairs. I read a lot of reviews here and at e-pinions and decided on this Eureka. First I will say it is very important to read all of the manual, because it actually addresses some of the issues people have with this vacuum, such as: (1) this machine is no heavier than my old one, but people complain it is heavy and hard to maneuver - the maneuverability and "heaviness" of it are greatly improved if one selects the proper brush height. Set it too low and yes, you will be struggling to pull this vacuum back toward you. The first time I used it OMG - it was quite a workout. I figured when I vacuumed I would count that as my upper body workout! Then I read the manual and duh! I raised the brush height one notch and what a difference. It's not light as a feather, but much better. (2) people complain that the brush roll stop (hard floor) switch is hard to move. The manual says it will be easier to move if the machine is on, the handle is released and you rock the machine back so there is no weight on the front wheels. It is hard if you try to move it otherwise. (3) the foot pedal for the handle release is pretty stiff, but if you find the "sweet spot" it's fine - just have to experiment with where to push. On my machine the hard part is getting the handle locked back up. I hope I don't have the belt breakage problems some people have had, but so far I'm pleased with its performance and it seems fairly sturdy to me. I had recently cleaned my carpets with Capture (a dry powder) and this new vac got up quite a bit of powder my old vac left behind. I loathe using tools on an upright thus I have a canister vac for that action - so I can't address the utility of that, but it looks way easier than on my old upright. So far I am happy with this vac, and I am a neat freak who likes her carpets to look perfectly clean! Hope this was helpful...
Customer Review: Beware Summary: 3 Stars
Pro's
Great suction
Con's
Too heavy.
Difficult to use in tight spaces.
Cleaning tools don't fit on extentsion rods.
If you stop and put the vacuum into the upright position while vacuuming carpet you need to bend over each time you resume vacuuming and turn the knob to carpet. The default is bare floor! Hello, this is a vacuum, that is used on carpet, the default should go to carpet. When I called to complain, they said it was designed that way to save the belt! If I had used this product before I purchased it, I would not have bought it.
Customer Review: Big Suck for the Buck! Summary: 5 Stars
This is likely the best vacuum machine we ever bought. Superb suction and brushing action. If the machine seems too hard to pull(pushing feels like a self-propelled action)adjust the height to a higher position. Machine is around 21 pounds, a bit heavy. But then again, Americans are significantly overweight so the Machine does double-duty. As to the difficulty adjusting the hard floor-carpet switch and returning the machine to it's upright position--they work nicely for us.
No need to spend 300-400 bucks to vacuum and leaving our Hoover cyclonic nuisance to return to a bag machine was a welcome relief.
