Tools and Hardware Reviews of Eureka Enviro Hard-Surface Floor Steamer,313ACustomer Review: 2nd Purchase Summary: 5 Stars
Love this product - just a pity the cord is shorter on this version than the previous purchase several years ago.
Customer Review: 6 cats, 3 dogs, 1 baby, no problem Summary: 5 Stars
With the recent birth of our first child we quickly realized that we needed to step-up our floor cleaning regimen. Our six indoor/outdoor cats and three large dogs track the country dirt and mud into the house at a frightening rate. (Not to mention the shedding, but that's a different battle!) We'd been doing the mop and chemical routine, but we were always worried about exposing our pets to the chemicals, annoyed by the wet floors, and never felt like the floor was really clean. Not to mention that filling, wheeling, and dumping a huge mop bucket multiple times is a big hassle!
Enviro Steamer to the rescue! Not only does the floor seem truly clean after use, but it's so easy to use that I'm cleaning more often. No chemicals, floor is dry within a minute, and I can clean the floor while carrying my daughter in her baby sling! I'm also not trying to shoo critters away from a wet, chemical-covered floor.
The first use did leave large amounts of water on the floor as other reviewers have noted, but it has worked fine since. Do make sure that you don't let the machine sit and steam in the tray--the pad will become soaked, resulting in an overly wet floor. The instructions say to use as soon as the steam starts, and they mean it!
My only complaint about this machine is the cord placement. It is low on the machine's body and is somehow awkward as you mop. Just can't seem to keep it out of the way. **edit 3/7/11 Last night I was tired of dealing with the cord so decided to zip tie it to the upper handle--much to my embarrassment I realized that the top cord bracket(for cord storage) also has a clip on the front side of the handle that the cord clips through for during use. The cord is now out of the way.**
Otherwise this product is fantastic. Our floors are crawling-baby ready!
Customer Review: A Clean Answer to Messy Mops Summary: 5 Stars
I was looking for an cleaner alternative to lugging around a mop and bucket. Sure, the old tried and true mop and bucket does the job. But there comes a time when the old fashioned way has to give to modern conveniences. I reviewed all the steam floor cleaners from Consumer Reports and people who had hands on experience with the vast array of products on the market. The one that kept standing out was the Eureka 313A. It has the washable replacement pads, large tank and long cord. The swivel handle makes getting into tight corners a breeze. I have hard ceramic tile, not flat, has "ripple" wavy surface through out the house. This steam mop gets the entire surface clean. Even the recessed grout comes clean. I found if you go across the surface at a slow even pace, allowing the steam to penetrate the dirty surface, the floor comes out clean and shiny. Unlike the mop, this Steamer has the ability to clean the floor from edge to edge. Up against the molding where dirt likes to get pushed and hide, this steamer has the ability to clean the hard to reach nooks and crannies. My pet peeve with any floor cleaner weather it is a vacuum, broom or mop is the dirty junk left up against the toe molding. After vacuuming the floor thoroughly, I had no problem cleaning the floor as verified by the dirty cloth pad. Speaking of which, they provide two in the box with the steamer. I did not realize, or overlooked the fact and purchased an extra pad at $14. So now I have 3, which is fine. Always having a spare is a good thing. I have used the Swifter and it was a messing ordeal. Leaving the sticky, wet cleaning solvent all over the floor. Not to mention the dirty pads which never soaked up the water or really removed the dirt. The swifter seemed to push the dirt from one corner to the other, always leaving a mess. This steamer cleans up all the mess, NEVER leaving a residue on the floor. Eureka has always had excellent floor cleaning products, this is without any doubt true with their Hard Floor Steamer. The pad is easy to change, two large "paddles" is all you have to depress to release the pad from the unit and you do not really have to touch the dirty underside, just grab by the side of the pad and throw into the laundry with your other dirty rags. No Fuss No Muss. Get this product and all your "mystery" stains will vanish without any hard scrubbing, making washing the floor no big deal. The unit is light weight and telescoping handle, allowing everybody to use the product.
Customer Review: A Disappointment So Far Summary: 2 Stars
After reading comprehensive and very positive reviews on the Eureka 313-A hard surface floor steamer, I decided it would be a good product for cleaning the tile floors in my rented condo, as the suface has fairly deep texturing and grout which is finished well below the tile surface--not something easy to get clean with a mop, and too large a surface for hands-and-knees cleaning. I am the sort of person who does read directions--all of them--and I did read all the instructions and cautions which came with the steamer before using it. I followed these instructions closely, noting that one is cautioned to keep the steamer head level so as not to tip water out. Well, I tried. Unfortunately, the catch in the handle which keeps handle upright until pulled into a working position is very stiff, so the first time I tried release the mop handle from the upright postion to begin, the whole mop head tipped with it. I did not see any water tipped out, and I did see steam coming out as directed, so I started using the steamer. Water everywhere! Not hot water either. I mopped the water up, put aside the first of the two floor cloths which come with the steamer, as it was now dripping wet, and put on the second, dry cloth. I had followed directions and turned the mop off to do all this stuff before trying to steam the floor again. I turned the product on, waited for steam (yes, easy to see it coming out the sides of the cloth) and tried again, releasing the handle very carefully this time. Once again, it spread lot of wetness over the tile, but I could not tell that I was really doing anything but spreading water over the floor. I tried letting the steamer sit in one spot on the floor for up to thirty seconds to see how warm/hot the tile got underneath--not very. In the end, I ran trials with various floorcloths (thicker and thinner) and various amounts of water (filling the machine less than directed as well as just as much as directed--and being very careful not to exceed the amount of water directed). The result was the same. I got a wet floor, which was not cleaned any better than I could have done skating a wet towel around under my feet. This is the only time I have used the damned thing so far. Have I made some error in using it? If I have, I have not been able to figure out what. When I don't have anything else to do (ha!) I'll get it out and try again. But so far it is a BIG DISAPPOINTMENT.
Customer Review: A Disappointment! Summary: 2 Stars
I read all the wonderful reviews and was excited to find something better than the streaky, somewhat sticky mess left by the Swiffer mop. The Eureka Floor Steamer is well built, easy to assemble and use and heats up quickly. I carefully vacuumed before use so as not to smear the floors with any dust or dirt. Unfortunately, after using it, my new laminate floors are covered with a dull, streaky film. The only improvement over the Swiffer is that the floor isn't sticky. The floor is probably clean, but it sure isn't pretty! I did more research on cleaning laminate flooring and will try a vinegar water solution and see if that works.
I really wanted to love this product, but it's not the answer for laminate flooring. I suspect it may perform better on ceramic tile and linoleum.
