Tools and Hardware Reviews of Factory Reconditioned Expand-It ZR15518 Edger Attachment For String TrimmersCustomer Review: A good worker right out of the box Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered this edger as my first attachment for the Troy-Bilt TB70SS 2-cycle string trimmer I purchased locally last summer. Troy-Bilt 31cc 2-Cycle Gas Powered Straight Shaft String Trimmer With SpeedLock #TB70SS Having read the reviews here and recognizing that some have had trouble with the "universal" nature of the Expand-It attachments on various machines, I was inclined to be skeptical.
I need not have worried. The attachment arrived in good shape, and appeared to be in never-used condition. The only indication that it is not new is the "RECON" mark heat-stamped into the plastic near the curb guard. The attachment mated perfectly with my power unit, and off I went.
It took about 20 feet of sidewalk before I got the hang of edging with this attachment; following that, the job went fast. Homelite says that light contact with the sidewalk or curb wlll not damage the blade. Good thing, because on this first cut of a never-edged sidewalk the sparks were occasionally flying! Now that I can see the edge I anticipate future jobs will be easier.
This appears to be a sturdy, well-built tool. Buying factory-reconditioned is a little like eating pot-luck, but the total $40 I paid, including shipping, is about two-thirds the lowest price I found for new attachments.
Customer Review: Broken on First Use Summary: 1 Stars
Used for a short time for the first edging of my house lot. I waited to use it until the soil was soft and moist from some rain. I was careful to not overload it because I was skeptical of the durability of a cable drive. I did not expect it to fail on the first day! The blade stopped driving. Either the cable broke or the gears stopped driving because I could turn the cable but the blade would not rotate. The Recon unit appeared to have been new so the design must be weak. Had to return ship the broken unit. CPO did their best and shipped me a replacement on warranty but I have no confidence the replacement will be better.
Customer Review: Didn't Work with Troy-Bilt String Trimmer Summary: 1 Stars
This Homelite Expand-It Edger Attachment was not compatible with my Troy-Bilt 4-cycle string trimmer, in spite of being advertised as a "universal" attachment. The flexible drive shaft was too short to mate securely with the drive nut in the Troy-Bilt unit, resulting in the cutting blade's stopping under any sort of load. After conferring with Homelite's customer service department, I returned the attachment to Amazon.
I cannot speak for how well the attachment might work with other brands of string trimmers.
Customer Review: Does the job, but hard on the back Summary: 3 Stars
The Expand-It Edger works great. I definitely prefer this type of edger vs the 4 wheel big engine kind. The only thing I really dislike about it is the shaft is too short. I am 5'6" and you may notice in some images online, the average height person needs to hold the edger below waist height in order for the guide and blades to cut properly. After about 20 minutes my back was killing me. I started working with a weight belt, which helps a little - but ideally they should have designed the attachment with an extra foot of length (or varible length would have been great!)
Customer Review: Edger Summary: 4 Stars
A little akward to use at first, but after you get used to it, it does a fairley decient job.
