Tools and Hardware Reviews of FastCap Accuscribe Scribing Tool

Customer Review: Ok,not great
Summary: 2 Stars

This tool is useful for about 20% of anything that I've scribed. It can't be used for anything that needs to be "dead nuts". The cheap little dollar scribe works a ton better and it only cost a buck!

Customer Review: Poor Quality Trumps Great Idea
Summary: 2 Stars

Granted, FastCap has developed many innovative designs when it comes to woodworking tools. What makes their tools even more appealing is the seemingly reasonable price at which this innovation is offered. But after using this scribe and their "Flatback" measuring tape for a couple of years I would have to say that the reasonable price is not a worthwhile trade-off for the substandard quality of the materials and workmanship delivered.

The flat reference surface, articulated marking arm, knurled brass knobs, and built-in pencil sharpener are fantastic ideas. However, the surfaces of the two-piece molded plastic frame do not align properly and flex a great deal. The movement of the arms is not smooth which makes it difficult to fine tune the adjustment. There is a metal pin encased in the plastic housing that is supposed to be retractable enabling the tool to be used as a compass, but the pin will stay locked neither in the extended position nor the retracted position making it a useless annoyance.

While it still takes up space in my toolbag, I often find it easier to cut a gauge block out of a piece of scrap and sharpen my carp pencil than to use the Accuscribe to scribe a joint.

I would be willing to pay more, for a great idea that was also well executed.

Customer Review: Poor design
Summary: 1 Stars

The leg that holds the pin is made up of two plastic halfs and nothing holds them together. As a consiquence, the pin keeps falling out and the two halfs split apart.
I tried to contact the manufacturer, Fastcap, and complain but the URL stamped on the product is not a working website. I guess they are so proud of their products they want to hide.

Customer Review: Satisfied, could be better
Summary: 4 Stars

Does it's job well and the price is right. I'm a finish carpenter and I've been using it for a month or so.

Pros: Flat bottom for accurate scribing to smooth surfaces, Retractable metal point for rough/irregular materials. Adjustment knobs are solid, no slop. Built-in pencil sharpener is very clever and incredibly handy.

Cons: Too big/clunky, won't fit into the utility knife-sized slots in most tool belts. The flat bottom is nice but it is so wide that it makes the tool needlessly bulky and inaccurate on semi-rough surfaces (like heavily-textured walls and ceilings). The triple adjustment knob setup is a little awkward, it's almost impossible to adjust it one-handed while holding moldings with the other.

Customer Review: Scribing Tool that works Great
Summary: 5 Stars

I have many dividers or compasses and this one is much easier to use. It gets into areas the others can't. Its pretty easy to adjust. I install cabinets and I scribe all my spacers to fit tight against the wall and this tool handles this without problem.
