Tools and Hardware Reviews of Fein MultiMaster FMM 250Q Top Variable Speed Sanding and Scraping/Cutting Tool with Case

Customer Review: Excellent for detail work, but costly and has lousy packaging
Summary: 4 Stars

My hubbie got this from Fein web site (FMM 250Q) and got it fast. However, we had missing parts (a cellopane wraped 3 blade combination of accessories) that should come with the kit. Called Fein and they were surprised that those were missing, but sent to us by UPS anyway without charges. Do not have 365/7/24 customer service, but people who picked up the phone are nice and professional.

Packaging is not as good as expected. After we took the tool out, we cannot put it back unless we took out those filmsy plastic packaging inside the tool box provided. They need better packaging design for such a high price tool.

Tool seem to be well made, but accessories are very expansive. For charging this kind of price, Fein should have included all accessories in the product.

For using, I am not strong enough to flip the handle to change the accessories. However, I like using it to cut wood board and pipes. My hubby has used this to cut sidings, trims and he used this to change sidings in the front portion of our house and he likes the tool. We are planning on using the MulitMaster to sand down the window trims for re-painting this coming year. We like using this tool for detail work and projects that are limited in space.

I understand that Dremmel and Rockwell has came out with similar product (even look the same), but at a lower price level, but I am not sure if the quality are as good as this one from Fein.

Overall, we like the tool, but think it is a bit costly, especially when you need to order additional accessories.

Customer Review: Excellent product and a great tool to have
Summary: 5 Stars

The Fein MultiMaster is an extremely well built piece of machinery, it is sturdy, simple and easy to use. I install a lot of laminate and hard wood flooring and this tool cuts down the install time dramatically especially for rooms with odd angles. The tools sanding abilities are excellent with a great variety of different attachments for the trickiest of sanding jobs. One small complaint was the vacuum attachment which I could not get to work with either of the two vacuums I own, I need to work on making a special adapter to allow it to fit. Overall I am extremely glad I bought this tool.

Customer Review: Excellent tool for wood floor installation
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought the Fein Multimaster for a wood floor installation as there were many
undercutting operations that it was clear that tool would be required for. If you
are changing out carpet for a wood floor, undercutting the sheet rock for clearance
and to get that "installed when the house was built" look, you will find this tool very useful
to catch those spots that the Crain Supersaw can't get to. You can't live without
the case because of the large collection of blades and attachments you will acquire.
Using the Multimaster to cut the underlayment around the kitchen counters will
consume a blade standard wood blade, but is a lot safer than using a
toe kick saw and the fein will reach all the corners.

In addition to the kit, you will need the E-cut combo blade kit that has the
precision wood blade (for cutting door jambs), the standard wood blade
(for cutting underlayment around counters using the depth stop) and a
wood metal blade that you can never have enough of. The "wood metal" blades
are bimetal and last longer, so you always use them when they will do the job nicely.
Save your dull bimetal blades, they are excellent power scrapers. You know the
blade is dull when it starts burning the wood a bit.

The carbide rasp in the kit is the cat's meow. You will find that contractors
spilled a lot of paint and sheet rock mud that the carpet covered. This will
make your floor uneven if you don't clean it up. The neat thing about the rasp
is that you can soak it in paint remover when it gets gummed up and it is ready
to go again. It will also do a good job cleaning up mortar around the fireplace.

The fein costs quite a bit and the blades cost a lot as consumables, but the tool
is useful for a lot of cutting that would otherwise be very difficult to impossible
to get done. Some of the aftermarket blades are cheaper but only offer four
positions on the tool. These are the most common mounting positions.

Customer Review: Expensive but good
Summary: 4 Stars

I requested this tool as a birthday present from the wife to patch my hardwood floor. After removing a closet as part of my kitchen remodel I had some square cuts on my oak flooring that I needed to stagger (ie: cut in between existing boards) in order to make the repair seamless.

Online instructions had said to use a chisel so I got my trusty Craftsman, sharpened it on the bench grinder, and started whacking away. To my dismay, the super-hard red oak barely budged....time for a Fein Multi Master!

Through trial and error I realized that the best bet is to score a line for the tool to start in (using a razor blade and the above mentioned chisel) otherwise it will wildly vibrate about ruining perfectly good floor boards. I used that technique as well as lowered to tool to the slowest speed to get a good cut line, then would give it full power. I have made about 15 cuts so far and the e-blade is still holding up nice despite the copious amounts of black smoke created when cross cutting the oak.

The tool it's self seems to be well made although the variable speed control is awkwardly located at the back and difficult to adjust (especially when it is running) - and there are no power indicators on it so the first couple times are trial and error. There is no lack of power with the Fein but seems that it could have more control. Perhaps I have shaky hands but I challenge anyone to put this tool on full blast and make a strait knife like plunge cut. It seems that the vibrating is not only side to side but back and forth to a degree. Another thing to be on the lookout for is the actual extension of the vibrating blade. With it moving so fast it is easy to get past where you want to cut as the blade edge is blurry and hard to view when running.

The case is a complete disappointment as the interior is not blow molded but rather has a flimsy plastic cut out that the tool rests in that is about the thickness of three sheets of paper. Mine was broken from the get-go so I will be contacting Amazon for a replacement liner. Moreover, the case does not open 180 degrees but rather only 90 degrees. I am still not sure why it was designed this way as every other tool case I have opens fully. Unless your surface is flat, you run the risk of getting a finger slammed closed in it. All this in a case that costs over $100! Had I to do it over again I think I would forego the case and get a bag to throw it in.

Amongst other qualifiers I rate products on value. How does the Fein measure up? Well, it is HORRIFICALLY expensive for what it is and the replacement blades will run you to the poor house. However, it has the distinction of doing what no other tool can. Funny, this thing reminds me of my BMW M3....:)

Should you get it? If you can avoid it I would say no, but as I stated it has capabilities that no other tool I know of has. If someone made a cheap knock-off of it I would get that in a second being a DIYer. For a pro it is worth the money.

Customer Review: Expensive but...
Summary: 5 Stars

My review will be just like most reviews of the Fein Multimaster. It's very expensive, the attachments are really expensive, but this tool does the job that other tools don't do. The first week I used it a half a dozen times. It really works, I'm glad I got, I wish the accessories were cheaper.
