Tools and Hardware Reviews of Fenix P1D CE, Black, 135 LumensCustomer Review: Awesome value, but some flaws Summary: 4 Stars
The fenix P1D definitely offers the highest brightness to size ratio on the market. It's light, affordable, powerful, sleek, and economical with regard to battery use. I carry it with me everywhere I go. It's like a tiny, portable xenon parking-lot streetlight. Everything I say after this should be colored with the fact that this flashlight is totally worth the money.
However there are definite sore spots, which prove that it is not the ultimate in flashlight technology.
First, there is the twisty-turny mode change system. It's clever, but not what I'd call elegant. In fact, it's pretty annoying. You have to twist the head repeatedly to change modes, so if you want to use low-mode all the time (as much light as a normal flashlight), every time you turn on the light you have to twist forwards and backwards three times. And the twist requires a surprising amount of torque, because of the rubber gasket which aids in water resistance. I would have preferred an in-line switch design.
Second the difference between high-mode and normal-mode is supposedly 70 to 135 lumens. I'm not sure how comparable quantities of lumens are, but subjectively speaking, high-mode is MAYBE ten percent brighter than normal-mode. For a while I thought that my P1D had a faulty circuitboard, such that the first two modes were the same, but careful analysis revealed that high mode does provide a slightly brighter beam, but certainly not the nearly-twice brightness I imagined that almost-twice the lumens suggests.
Lastly, the focus is kinda crappy. On every mode there is a tight center beam surrounded by a ten times wider radius that is one tenth the brightness of the center beam. Since I cannot imagine a time when I would want to have both extremely weak and extremely bright light in the same direction, it seems wasteful. Better to have all the emitted light in either a single tight beam or spread out in a wide swath, not both. If only that annoying twisty head offered beam focus control instead of a needly complicated on-switch.
All this, yet it's still a totally awesome flashlight.
Customer Review: Does This Flashlight Break Any Laws of Physics? Summary: 5 Stars
It just does not seem possible, so much light and decent run time in such a small package! The secret is the new more efficient Cree LED emitter, and use of a Cr-123 battery, which has higher energy density than standard alkaline or Nimh batteries.
The P1D-CE is small enough for keychain carry and throws more light than a common 4-"d" cell Maglite!. At one time the "rule" for flashlights went: "You can have Bright, Small, or long battery life... choose any two." The P1D-CE is close to being an exception to this rule.
The P1D-CE is also available in "natural" finish... very good looking!
Customer Review: Fenix P1D - Feedback Summary: 5 Stars
Fenix P1D-CE Black (Cree Edition), SuperBright 1XCR123A LED Flashlight (5 Output levels) - 135 Lumens
This is an insanely compact and powerful flashlight. It is almost the flashlight I have been yearning to have for years since I have owned Maglites for its durability and brightness. Nothing I previously owned comes close to this little titan!
It is great as I do a lot of outdoors and would like as little bulk & weight as possible. I'm not going to leave home without this with me.
I mentioned "almost" earlier as i feel the switch and selector modes can be improved but then again, sometimes KISS method reduces the points of failure.
All in all, I love this and highly recommend this product.
Customer Review: Fenix P1D Cree Summary: 4 Stars
The light is tiny and you can hang it off the keychain.
Pretty intense light coming from such a small package.
Highly recommend.
4 star because it's a lot ($53) to pay for such a tiny flashlight.
Customer Review: Good Flashlight but they make something better at about the same size Summary: 3 Stars
This is a good, bright flashlihght except the head of the flashlight constantly have to be moved around which is not an ideal design for a tactical situation as you have to use both hands to get the light to turn on. If you want a very bright flashlight thats small enough to go on a keychain I'd recommend the Fenix P2D Cree version. Its like a quarter inch bigger and has a nice clicker on the tail end so you can fiddle around with it with only one hand. I'm happy with it at least and its very bright and good on battery life.
