Customer Review: Great Filters
Summary: 5 Stars

Quick Shipping. No damage to filters. I have been using these filters for years. They really cut down on the dust in the house.

Customer Review: Sometimes things really do work like they claim!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my first Amazon review and the difference these filters and purchase of a humidifier(vornado evaporative cool) have made warranted it. We all have allergies in our home from dust mites, dust, pollen mostly. We don't smoke and we have no pets. Typically despite the fact all year long that we take allergy medicine we are usually still dealing with some sort of allergy symptom like runny/stuffy nose and so on. This winter however my son (9 yrs old) for the last few weeks or more started coughing all the time. No extra cough medicine etc would touch it so my research began to find a fix. I did a ton of research and read more reviews than I think I ever have first to work on a humidifier to put some moisture in our home since we live in the cold midwest. I decided on the Vornado whole room evaporative humidifier and sorry Amazon, but I bought it for much less at Bed Bath and Beyond. It does have fan noise, however it is pretty amazing home much of a difference it made for him in lessening his coughing fits at least as long as he was in his room anyway. So, I'll need to get a 2nd one to handle our upstairs as my eyes/nose are pretty dry, but anyway back to the filters...

Once I noticed the humidifier which has filters (not as good as these however) was working it got me to thinking maybe the reason the allergies are bad are really due to air quality so I started my research on what to do about that. The EPA website had some pretty good information on biological contaminants and symptoms etc... I decided buying an air cleaner would be too large of an expense to cover all the rooms in our home and the filter cost, wow! If I had to go that route I'd just buy a big box fan or two and mount filters on them for a lot LESS money as that's pretty much all they are anyway and would blow a lot more air too and cover more area. To test my theory on air cleaning I decided to buy one of these filters locally to test and see if it made any difference for any of us especially my son who seems to be having the hardest time of it this winter and does during the summer as well with allergies.

I bought that filter on Sunday around noon, put it in and turned the fan on my heat unit so that the fan ran nonstop regardless of when the heat turned on/off to really pull air through and clean and left it like that for 10 hrs, turned it off and next morning turned it on again and ran the fan from 7am until 10 that night. On Sunday within about 3 hrs or so it occured to me that I wasn't hearing him cough nonstop anymore, amazing..but figured okay let's see what he's like in the morning etc and must admit I'm still going to monitor this over time yet. Monday morning I asked him how he felt and he looked surprised and said I think I feel better and no coughing. My husband and I also thought we felt better and I wasn't having the itchy eye feeling and post nasal drip issue and slight headache that generally greats me in the morning and persists thru the day. My daughter who generally does a lot of clearing out snot in the morning again despite a good allergy medicine quit doing that.

Oh...and I had cheap fiberglass 1 month filters in our furnace as I believed the heating repair guy I asked a few years back what he thought and he said "they are all the same one just costs more", well I respectively disagree w/ that statement.

So, like I said it's only been a few days and I've not kept my fan on my heat unit running today at all although I have noticed a few sniffles here (kids on a snow day here) and there in us and a couple coughs from my son, so I think I need to run that again for maybe a week or so to clear out the crap in our closed up for the winter house...but long story short it is working. I will also likely be replacing these monthly or maybe later on every 2 months I would bet but that is a small price to pay to feel well and buying them in bulk should help.

Customer Review: Too high a restriction, the house got cold...
Summary: 1 Stars

I found this Amazon product page while looking for information on furnace problems and this filter.

We've been using the red "micro" Filtrete filters for years. This was our first try with the purple "Ultra" filters. I tried one in December, and removed it today (January 3, 2010).

It cut our heating ability by at least 40%!

With the red Filtrete, we have at least 92 degrees of heating ability: if we set the thermostat at 72, the house maintains 72, even when the outside "ambient" temperature (the average of the day's low and high) is -20 degrees F.

Yesterday and today, we lost the ability to maintain temperature. On a day with an average temperature of 10 degrees F (low of 5, high of 15) the house dropped to 65 degrees. So, instead of being able to heat the house to at least 90 degrees above the outside temperature, we are down to only 55 degrees.

The FAQ on the 3M site glosses over this problem.

"Do I have to worry about restricted airflow with Filtrete filters?
Filtrete filters are designed to operate in most residential furnaces and air conditioning systems. If a Filtrete filter remains in use longer than three months, it may begin to restrict airflow or cause the system to malfunction. It also could restrict airflow in some higher efficiency/air conditioning systems. In this case, change the filter more frequently."

Bull! Our furnace isn't "high efficiency", it's an older 125000 BTU Singer, with a 160 degree limiter on the heat exchanger. A 3 or 4 week (not month) old purple "Ultra" choked the furnace, but when I put the 2 month old red "Micro" back in, the temperature came right back up!

Customer Review: Too restrictive on equipment
Summary: 1 Stars

These filters are too restrictive for the heating and cooling equipment and cause a bigger load than needed on the blower motors. If you don't have allergies the cheapo filters are just fine, if you do have asthma or allergies there are way better options out there. Such as ultra violent bulbs which kills any bacteria that does pass through the filter. I have had a few service calls where the filtrate has caused a/c coils to freeze up due to low air flow over the coil, not a bad way to make [...]

Also there's a basic media filter which collects up to 40 times more partials than the one inch filter. Which is also spread over a larger surface area for less equipment stress.

Or an electronic air cleaners that trap up to 98percent of the pollutants that pass through. I also know Lennox makes an air cleaner with a built in ultra violent bulb. You can get a much better product than the 1 inch filters from a quality hvac contractor it might cost a little more up front but basically you will save the money in the long run. Filtrate are about [...]for one, you should change about once a month so over 4 years will cost double than an already superior product that's been on the market.

Get a straw and drink water from a cup, now pinch the straw and try taking a drink gets a little harder doesn't it? basically the same for these filtrate things

Customer Review: excellent filters
Summary: 5 Stars

The difference in air quality was substantial. I've used these filters for over a year. I have severe respiratory allergies, and they have made quite a difference. I stopped using them for a week to see the difference, and I'll never do that again. I highly recommend them!
