We use this in our basement in a Filtrete room air filter. It keeps mold and mildew out of the air very well, and allows us to keep clothing in a room that otherwise would not stay "fresh smelling."
I do add a layer of activated carbon, cut from Honeywell universal replacement pre-filter material, taped to the front, just to enhance the filter's ability to remove smells from the air. Together, the two filters do a wonderful job. The air smells great, and my wife doesn't sneeze from allergens in the air there anymore.
The four-pack is the best way to buy. Unfortunately, Amazon seems to be about the only place to get these filters anymore.

these filters are not cheap - but they are definitely worth it. You can extend their life slightly by dusting them off with a damp rag to get the larger lint, but changing regularly really makes a difference in a sick room.
