Tools and Hardware Reviews of First Alert 2017F Fire and Water Chest, 0.19 Cubic Foot, GrayCustomer Review: Just what we needed Summary: 4 Stars
Bought chest for interim "safe deposit box". Fits papers just right (note internal size...if storing folders will have to allow room for them to bend some). Chest was a little damp inside when we received it, which was stated in other reviews. So, we left it open with fan blowing on it for a few hours to let it completely dry out before putting things in chest. We also opted to leave the dessicant packet inside, just in case, and after a month we have had no issues with dampness inside the chest. Since this is a known issue, I do check on it from time to time, just to make sure there is no dampness inside. We hope this will never need to be tested regarding its fire and water resistance. So far, we are content with the purchase.
Customer Review: Looks and feels solid, haven't tested it in a fire. Summary: 5 Stars
Looks and feels very heavy/sturdy. Haven't tested it in a fire (hope I don't have to, obviously). Room to fit 8.5 x 11" documents without folding, which is very nice. Must be stored horizontally to be effective (according to the instructions). Comes with two keys. Probably wouldn't be great strictly for privacy applications since you could most likely break the handle and/or lock fairly easily if you really wanted to, but that's okay because it's just supposed to provide protection from fire and water. I don't know if it's ultimately a five-star product or not (that would depend on how it performs in a fire), but I have no complaints thus far and I'm going with the "innocent until proven guilty" style of rating. Would buy again.
---Update--- After a few months of storing documents inside this thing, I have encountered a common problem among users: paper becomes damp and moldy. My documents were not ruined, but they felt slightly damp whenever I opened the safe, and some cash I put in there was starting to grow brown mold. I'm not sure why this is (lack of air circulation, maybe?), but the company is aware of the problem and will give you free desiccants (silica gel packets) to soak up the moisture. All you have to do is call them and ask. I got my free silica gel packets in the mail a few weeks ago (they sent several big ones), and threw them in the safe. Now my documents feel nice and dry, and I'm no longer worried that they're going to get ruined by moisture/mold. A smart response by the company to an otherwise annoying problem!
Customer Review: MOLD everywhere Summary: 1 Stars
This is a terrible product. Despite putting a dessicant in with my passport and other documents, when I opened the box a few months later they were all COVERED with mold. I live in a dry climate and the box was stored in a dry area (not a damp basement), so how the mold formed is beyond me. But it happened, and it looks like it happened to many other people.
Additionally, the locking mechanism is plastic, giving it a very short lifespan in a fire.
Considering how much mold was on the inside of this box, I laugh thinking how it would hold up in a flood.
I encourage you to spend your money on a better product; this one is too much of a risk.
Customer Review: MOLD! Summary: 1 Stars
Please do not buy this product unless you would like your belongings to be covered in mold in a period of about 2 months- I had all of my most precious family photos in here and now they will smell like mold eternally- I threw product in the trash- would not even give it away to my worst enemy- I hate this safe!!!!
Customer Review: Mold Box - First Alert Safe - Brinks Home Security Safe Summary: 1 Stars
NO STARS! READ
I bought a similar First Alert lock box from Brinks Home Security (large enough for hanging file folders - CLASS 350) for my sister so she could PROTECT IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS. Simply, this product RUINS DOCUMENTS, NOT PROTECT THEM. You would think that a company like Brinks would sell a product that would go up and beyond the rated specs of protecting the valuable items inside the lock box. Come on Brinks, how can you sale CRAP like this - I know for MONEY!! This problem didn't show up in field tests? Sure it did and yet Brinks continued to sell this junk. This is NOT a lock box it is a MOLD BOX and it does a great job in ruining documents ! For the people that gave this product one star or better rating, GO GET YOUR DOCUMENTS OUT OF THE BOX BEFORE THEY ARE RUINED!
