Recently, I screwed up lighting a fire in my fire place and smoke billowed into the room - the only detector that went off was my 20 year old wired detector. The first alert just sat there waiting for me to die of smoke inhalation. I don't know what to think anymore because if it doesn't go off after a cloud of smoke fills the room from an actual fire (in my fireplace), what is it going to take to set the bloody thing off - a gas explosion? I suggest trying one (not 6 like I did) and test them out to your satisfaction before you go further. This first alert smoke detector uses a photo electric sensor which is said to be better at detecting smoldering fires than ionization based detecters - go figure. I also purchased ionization based smoke detectors (Kidde PI9000). Finally, the 20 year old detectors wired into the house are probably are ionization based. In a separate test using cigar smoke, the 20 year old detectors were again much more sensitive than either of the new sensors. The new ionization sensor was more sensitive than these first alert photo electric sensors. The wireless technology worked fine in my townhouse on all levels and even in my garage.
