Of course, First Alert is known for quality products, but this device is better yet. Very easy to install, easy to maintain (uses double A instead of 9 volt), relatively inexpensive and sounds an alarm shrill enough to wake up my 10 year old dog. While at first I was impressed by the dual ability to sense carbon monoxide and smoke, the great feeling I initially had upon buying this product faded fast. We bought this smoke/carbon monoxide alarm to replace a smoke detector that quit working after about 18 months(also from First Alert) in our master bedroom. I have a Kidde Carbon Monoxide/Smoke alarm in the basement which has worked great for 3 years without any problems. However, they did not have that one at the home improvement store I bought it from, so I settled on this gem.
Long story short, about 3 months after buying this detector it started chiming 3 times at about 3 AM after a grueling day. Evidently, it was only a coincidence that the time roughly matched the amount of chimes, so this was not helpful. I was able to crawl on a step stool and pull the thing down figuring perhaps the batteries I put in it were old and near death. So, giving this the benefit of the doubt, I placed two brand new batteries in there and placed it back on the ceiling, sleeping soundly under my blanket of smoke and carbon monoxide protection. Two days later, same stinking thing. After overlooking the obvious sticker on the back of the thing, I scoured the bowels of the internet only to find that the self-test had determined that the detector had failed and chimed to let me know so it would be replaced. I'm replacing it alright, with another make. Moral of the story: Don't buy a first alert product. They are awful. How do you put something this dreadful out on the market. I basically threw away $50+.

Had an alarm located near the kitchen using the ionization technology. It was driving me crazy with false alarms. I couldn't even use the toaster without the thing going into full panic, necessitating me having to leave my food preparations and charge around to silence the alarm. The unit lasted only a year...no surprise under the circumstances. While researching for a replacement I came to realize that the photoelectric technology would more likely be better for said location. Plus, I found that it was wise to use both types in the home. Since getting this alarm, I have had no false alarms while cooking and now have the satisfaction of having both types, since the ionization ones are in other areas of the home. Now, if this one just works when there is a true kitchen alert needed, I'm all set.Customer Review: Carbon Monoxide/smoke alert

After a carbon monoxide scare at our home we were very glad to find this product. It was easy to set up and easy to place. We would recommend every home locate these units throughout.
