I had a cheap hatchet before- never stayed sharp and prone to nicks. This one is light, very sharp and a pleasure to use. So far it has stayed sharp thru a few hours of use (non-continuous). Great value as it is not much more money than the cheap ones sold at discount stores or tool outlets. Have not had to sharpen yet so I am hoping it holds a new edge well.

I purchased this hatchet at my local Lowe's two weeks ago. I used it primarily to make kindling from larger seasond firewood. It worked very well until last night when the handle shattered just below the head. I sent an e-mail to Fiskars and am now waiting for their response.Customer Review: an axe to grind

This is the one to get, sharp, light weight, and comfortable. It is much better than the 8 inch one I purchased for backpacking, and hardly weighs more. granted, this is not for splitting wood, it is for felling small trees, removing branches, and making kindeling.

You would strap it to your backpack, it is so lightweight. Don't ever buy a wooden handled hatchet. Reliable and sturdy. VERY sharp and versatile. Should be next to everybody's fireplace or wood stove.
