Flowtron has the most cost effective solution to leaf reduction. Nylon strings never need sharping and light weight electric motor is a no maintenance power source. I talked directly with Flowtron before making my purchase. The woman at the help desk claimed every one of her now adult (and homeowner) children has purchased this machine. Here is why I believe her and why I also believe in this product...
Your first point in the critical path to purchase this machine should be to decide that you need a solution just for leaves. In addition to the Flowtron LE-900, I own a handheld blower/shredder and a heavy duty branch shredder. The blower/vac is great for leaf collection but slow at reduction (probably 8/1 at best). The gasoline powered shredder will reduce thick branches into woodchips and/or sawdust however for leaf reduction it is no better than the blower/vac while being much harder to process leaf material through.
Flowtron's machine, rated at 30/1 reduction, is the best solution for leaf reduction that I have found. Purchased from Amazon and used for two years, this machine takes the once a year leaf pile which I build in my driveway (as tall and long as my car) and helps me create soil which is critical for spring planting and much better than the stuff you'll have to carry home from the garden supply store. In Georgia where red clay dominates the soil, this compost is a treasure.
Be prepared to replace the nylon string frequently - I have switched to a heavy-duty orange and white product sold at the large hardware retailers. When the motor overworks it will automatically shut-off. The reset button is a small tab accessible from within the bottom side of the unit -away from the nylon string. You will also have to take responsibility for shutting down the machine when it encounters items you should not have added to the hopper - branches any larger than twigs - which this machine was not intended to shred.
After gathering a handful of dry leafs (do yourself a favor and avoid trying to shred wet material), feed them gently into the funnel so you drop in only leafs and hold on to the small branches you may have also picked up. Anything but the smallest of sticks will jam (and in the extreme - melt) the spinning plastic head (replaceable for a small fee from the manufacturer). A little patience avoids the problem altogether. It is loud and dusty but the learning curve is easily mastered and will reward you with the a compost material you can easily "turn" i.e. integrate with other material and produce a rich soil.
Bottom line: Want to change a large leaf pile into easily managed compost which will break down efficiently? This machine is more than worth your time to adjust to. If there is a substitute, I haven't found it.
Update 05-Mar-2007: Purchased the newest model through Amazon a few months ago. After several years of hard work the motor in my first model gave out. No regrets - it served me well. The new model has small improvements (better fitting funnel and a "nut" instead of a "screw" to hold down the spinning head.
