Butter bells are a great piece of old technology. It's genius really. The bell accommodates an entire stick of softened butter. Place about an inch or two of clean water in the basin and store for "a long" time (I've gotten about a month out of one go) changing the water every few days. The water surrounds the bell and forms, essentially, and airtight seal which then inhibits the oxidation of the lipid and keeps unwanted microorganisms out.
As far as butter bells go, this marble one is just beautiful. Both pieces are fashioned out of one piece (respectively). No seams!

Forget storing that creamy butter in a Ziploc bag tossed to the side of your fridge. If you want fresh and spreadable butter, use this marble butter keeper, which allows you to safely store your butter out of the refrigerator so it stays soft and won't tear up your bread when it comes to slathering it on. To use, fill the base of the butter keeper with 1/4-cup of cold water, pack the softened butter into the cup of the lid and invert onto the base of the butter keeper. The water creates a complete seal around the cup to keep the butter fresh. To ensure constant freshness, store away from sunlight or heat.
