Tools and Hardware Reviews of Frigidaire 50-Pint Dehumidifier, FAD504TDD

Customer Review: Doing the job-and quietly
Summary: 5 Stars

Since I first plugged in my new Frigidaire dehumidifier, it has been operating beautifully. Pulling the moisture from my basement, and quieter than any dehumidifier I've ever owned. My last two were a DeLonghi and a Whirlpool, and I wouldn't have either of them as a gift.

Customer Review: Don't Buy This Product!
Summary: 1 Stars

My unit stopped working in less than one month. The Frigidaire customer service number, 1-800-944-9044, doesn't even have an option for dehumidifier repair. I am thoroughly dissatisfied and plan to pursue a refund.

Customer Review: Dry at last
Summary: 5 Stars

First.... thumbs up to Amazon for great service!!! The unit arrived in afew days. Simple setup. I read the reviews regarding noisy/hard to empty. Couldn't disagree more. Located in our laundry room next to the family room with no door. Can't hear it running, but can hear the 28 year old one running in the garage through a closed door. Have had it running continuosly through the heat wave since we got it and empty it 2-3 times a day. Have yet to spill a drop when emptying the bucket. Can't comment on longevity since we only have had it about 6 weeks.

Customer Review: Dust mite allergies finally under control
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been suffering from indoor allergies during the past 17 years. I am particularly allergic to dust mites. I lived almost my entire life in Puerto Rico, where it is warm and humid year round. I tried everything to combat my 24/7 runny nose and congestion, including prescription drugs, immunotherapy (allergy shots), allergen free mattress and pillow covers, and nose surgery (polyp removal and sinus drainage). None of this gave me any relief. I knew that dust mites thrive in warm humid environments, so I even tried a dehumidifier. Unfortunately, I had to return it shortly afterwards. As a general rule, homes in Puerto Rico have no central air conditioning, so it is hard to keep the humid air outside. In addition, running an air conditioner unit and dehumidifier nonstop was extremely expensive and impractical.

I moved to the Washington, DC, a little over a year ago. This area is well known for high humidity levels, but it is definitely not as humid as Puerto Rico. I moved during the springtime, and for the first time in my adult life, I had little to no allergy symptoms. Once the summer arrived, my runny nose and congestion came back. I was sick until early December, when, literally overnight, all my allergy symptoms disappeared. This made me realize that very low humidity levels in fact do have an impact on the dust mite population. I had read EPA and NIH studies indicating that the ideal humidity level to keep dust mites and mold at bay is between 40-50%. I was happy and allergy free until May of this year, when it started getting hotter and more humid. I then decided to give the dehumidifier one more try.

After reading the reviews in Amazon, I decided to purchase the Frigidaire 50-Pint Dehumidifier. This is the best purchase I have ever made, period. My health and quality of life have substantially improved after using this product.

First, the dehumidifier is very easy to use. I love the fact that it has an LED display, with actual and targeted humidity levels. It has a sleek contemporary design so it blends in nicely with my studio apartment's color scheme and furniture. The noise level is extremely low. In fact, it makes as much "noise" as my air conditioning unit. The bucket is very easy to handle and seems to be of good quality and sturdy construction. I usually empty it twice a day. Most importantly, the dehumidifier has been able to maintain the indoor humidity levels at 35-45%. I still take my allergy medication and get allergy shots, but after my past frustrations with conventional nasal allergy treatment, I can say without the shadow of a doubt, that the Frigidaire dehumidifier is keeping my dust mite allergies under control. Hopefully I will be able to reap the benefits of long term immunotherapy, but for the time being I will continue to rely on the Frigidaire dehumidifier for allergy control during the humid months. This is definitely a must buy item.

Customer Review: Effective and quiet with nice features
Summary: 4 Stars

This is the fourth dehumidifier I have owned over the last 20 years, and it is the nicest one yet. It is much quieter than the Whirlpool unit it replaced (which lost it freon after 8 years), even on the high fan speed. It also is very effective at lowering the humidity in my basement.

It is true that the fan runs constantly when the dehumidifier is plugged in, while the compressor cycles on and off. Circulating the room air might permit more complete and uniform removal of excess moisture, but it could also just be a a waste of energy. My solution was to plug the unit into an inexpensive timer (like that used to control lights while an vacation) set to turn it off and on at regular intervals. I found I only need to have the unit running about half the time for effective humidity control.

Two comments about features that are not clear until you use this dehumidifier.
1. The timer is only designed to allow for a one-time delayed start or delayed stop. After the unit starts or stops the timer becomes non-functional until you reset it. I had hopped the timer would be sophisticated enough to provide the scheduled on/off cycling like I describe above. I down-rated the unit to 4 stars because of this feature.
2. If you want to use a hose for continuous operation, then this dehumidifier allows you to connect it directly to the outlet where water would normally enter the catch bucket. Thus, when a hose is connected, water never enters the bucket at all. This is a real improvement over all my past units where the hose had to be connected to an outlet on the side of the bucket, which meant that there was always water in the bucket (resulting in a bacterial-fungal biofilm forming inside) and that the outlet could also break off the bucket.
