In order to get to any of the tools, you have to extend the pliers. Yes, extend. The pliers do not fold over, the way most pocket knives/pliers do. Instead, you flip the unit and the pliers extend. Then you can open the arms of the pliers and then pull open one of the tools. Also, when fully recessed, the tip of the pliers still stick out about 1/2 inch. Awkward in one's pocket.Customer Review: Of course it will break!

I have two Gerber 400's, one with the tool kit. They are superb examples of size efficiency. The knives hold an edge better than most such tools. As such, they are HARDER steel than some other brands. Hard, thin steel do not like twisting. Buy a cheap kitchen knife [...] for pumpkins, or use a 'pumpkin saw' (which incidentially will also break if twisted).
Other than that, the only advice I would give is to keep the 400's well-oiled. The sliding mechanism can bind- especially if used outdoors- unless you keep it oiled. This is explained in the flyer that comes with the tool.
BTW- Gerber will replace broken knife blades.

I have had 3 of these, each one replacing the last due to me pushing the limits of the multiple tools. Usually trying to pry something with the screwdriver or knife. What I like most about this tool, is that usually when I need it, I only have one hand available and with the sliding pliers, you can open it with one hand. Also, you can pull out the needed tool with one and with some practice. I used it as a Mobile Audio/Video/Security Installer, used it multiple times a day, everyday.Customer Review: Overall eh...

I was looking for an exact replacement. The picture was it. The product was not. The item shipped was not as pictured. Quite disappointing. And the product had a few rust spots on it. I am the proud owner of 2 of these Gerber multi-tools. I have owned 4 total, but I am prone to lose these things. I have loved all of my Gerber multi-tools. I am a teacher so I can't carry one at work, but in the summer I work in a warehouse and carry one everyday. I cannot tell you how many times I have used my multi-tool to cut, tighten or pry something. The small frame and easy "flick" opening action makes the gerber far superior to Leatherman multi-tools. I always have one in my hunting bag and one in my glovebox of my car. Here are some observations:
Pros:
- Small frame is super strong
- Easy "flick" out
- All tools are strong, i have yet to break one
- All tools lock - very easy to operate
- case is rugged and will take a beating
- Scissors are sharp and stay sharp
- nice grip on tool
- Knife is easy to sharpen
- Built to last
- Lightweight
Cons:
- takes some time to break in tool (i use some oil)
- Scissors tend to rust / stain if you do not clean them.
- Tends to collect dirt in the many groves
For the price this is a steal. I have owned leatherman and those suck in comparision to a gerber multi-tool. They are built to last and will take a beating. I have used my multi-tool to do everything from tighten a screw to cutting cord.
