This knife was purchased to be my "survival" knife. The Quality of this knife is great; if you do a search on this knife you will see it can go through a pretty good beating. The price and the quality of the knife and the Gerber name is what made me decide this was the survival knife for me. Upon receiving this brilliant tool (wouldn't really consider it a knife really... it has SO many uses), i was very impressed with not only the quick shipping by amazon (thanks boys), but also the amazing sheath and harness straps that came with the knife!
The ONLY REASON i did not give this knife 5 stars is because: one - i just got it and have not made it to the wilderness yet (its below freezing out there... ill wait till spring thanks), and two - i do not know its true durability.
I can say however that this is one of the finest pieces of equipment for its kind. I am going to be living in jungles in central and south america in the near future for a long duration of time. With this knife + my survival skills... anywhere is my home.

This was obviously design for casual military utility. The knife does well to say, cut webbing, rope, cloth, open MREs and boxes, wedge open a locked door, pry open a locked or rusted live electrical panel, saw thru sheet metal, break plexiglas, or carve obscene graphics on a wood table while waiting for Oscar Mike. It has a complex Molle sheath system that will stay firm and quiet on your LBE even while jumping from your UH60. The handle is big, and very comfortable, and electrically and mechanically isolated from the blade. So, when you jam it into a HV panel you wont be electocuted, and when you whack on it with a rock to cut thru a concrete slab your hand will stay comfy. It has stout drop point shape and soft stainless that will most like bend rather than snap when misused as a pry bar. It has an oversized swept hilt that protects even the biggest 'tards in your unit from cutting their hands :\
The serrations are deep and about 2/3 of the straight part of the blade. But they are on the wrong side for righties. Therefore using the knife carving or whittling or chopping thru a 2x4 or a tree branch can only be done with your left hand, or only with the short and mostly curved unserrated tip region. And then, thanks to the soft 420 stainless, you will be sharpening it every 10 minutes. Be advised, Pulling the knife out requires two hands and a surprising amount of force due to the surprisingly strong sheath friction lock (probably another Airborne requirement?). Knife + sheath is over a pound, thats a lot for a 5" knife. Summary, this knife is not optimal for woodwork, or backwoods hiking and survival.
5 stars for military, 3 stars for camping/civilian. I keep it in my toolbag. Average 4 stars.

I'm a hunter and camper and I have yet to think of a reason not to carry this knife on me. The blade came sharp and the feel of the knife is incredible. I have not had the need to use the glass punch or spear holes, but knowing I have that option gives me great peace of mind. Over all I'm more than happy with this product.
