Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 22-41420 Gator Combo Axe IICustomer Review: A lightweight. Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this axe about a year ago and the head broke off of the handle it's first day of use on a camping trip 50 miles from anywhere. I fell for the saw blade in the handle gimmick and I think that's exactly why this product failed so quickly. Instead of a nice solid handle made of fiberglass or hickory you get a hollow tube. The saw is pretty useless as well. This tool was not build for the grind, but it might be nice if you need to do some light weeding in your back yard. If you need an axe you can rely on this is not it.
Customer Review: A tough, usefull tool. Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this to use when camping/hiking/hunting. I has proven useful and much more durable than the standard wooden handle model. My kids haven't broken it yet and it shows no rust! The saw is good for small camping/woods tasks like removing small limbs that are in the way.
My only small complaint is that is hard to find when you drop it in the dark and the texture of the handle somehow keeps reflective tape (my solution to finding it in the dark) from sticking very well. I ended up putting on a bright colored lanyard.
Overall, a good practical addition. I will probably buy another one to keep in my truck.
Customer Review: Awesome axe; decent saw. Summary: 4 Stars
The axe is super sharp & holds an edge well. The longer handle gives it more power over the short model that is available. It makes axe work enjoyable.
The saw works, but...
The saw in the handle likes to work it's way out & rattle while using the axe - it is held in place only by a tiny magnet. I remove it while hiking, and while using the axe. I am surprised I have not lost it yet, and would not replace it if lost. IMHO, get a solid axe and a Sven saw to compliment it's use. You can't get both capabilities on this tool.
Customer Review: Awesome, A Must Have For all Campers Summary: 5 Stars
When I first pulled the little saw out I wasn't impressed with the size. When I actually used the saw is when I was surprised. This little saw cleared out a bunch of branches in no time. I was making space for my tent in a very sketchy area and didn't want holes in my tent, this thing cleared the way.
Customer Review: Axe and Saw... Good Combination... Summary: 5 Stars
I have found this combination to be a great addition to my pack for camping when I want to build a fire with wood I've brought up (nice, dry wood for cooking over, like a cedar or apple wood). I split logs (no larger than about 6 inches across and 10 inches long) and can use the saw for making a simple spit or pot support.
PROS:
Durability
Lightweight (28 oz. = Saw and Hatchet)
Inexpensive, given its two tools
CONS:
Axe head could be sharper
BOTTOM LINE: Excellent choice for the camper / hiker in mind. If you're going camping and don't need to split logs any larger than the above listing (which is pushing the limits, depending on the type of wood), GET THIS ITEM.
It's great for building camp fires and other smaller tasks. Also great for hikers who live in cool places like Idaho, where there are places you can build fires and who don't want to use a tiny stove to cook everything. GET THIS ITEM.
