Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 22-41578 Gorge Folding ShovelCustomer Review: A sturdily constructed shovel Summary: 5 Stars
I haven't used it yet, but this little shovel looks like it'll do the job I bought it for. I keep it in my van in case I have to dig out snow around my tires in the winter. Fast shipment.
Customer Review: Backpacker's Delight Summary: 4 Stars
I just got back from my first trip with my new Gorge, a 13 mile backpacking trip, and this shovel really delivered. There's a lot I like about it, but the two biggest features for me were the dual-utility of both hammer and shovel and the compact size. I also think the price is pretty fair.
I used the shovel for fire chores, cat holes and for driving in my tent stakes and it worked well for all of these tasks. It is VERY sturdy, more so than the E-Tools we had in the Army and I'd have no qualms about using this harshly. Also, the carry case is great because it keeps your dirty shovel from contacting the clean gear that might be near it in your pack.
There are 2 downsides, both of which have already been noted by other reviewers. The first is the spade. I live in sandy Florida, but anywhere else this shovel, as delivered, would be useless. You MUST sharpen the spade before this will be a useful shovel. The other problem is more an issue of scale. You don't get the impression from the picture of how small this shovel is. It's great for backpacking, but if you're looking for a shovel to throw in your car or something, it's a bit small. Make sure you check the dimensions before ordering.
Overall though, an excellent tool for an excellent price.
Customer Review: Be aware of what you are purchasing ... Summary: 3 Stars
For what it is, this shovel is very good. My only real complaint is that it is very dull; the "digging edge" could stand to be much sharper, as it is, it is not even rounded off. That's nothing that can't be fixed with an angle grinder, though :)
As far as construction, it's extremely solid, rugged, and well made, pretty much what you'd expect from Gerber.
What you should be aware of before you buy, though, is that it is *very* small. This isn't comparable to the GI "trenching tools", or the Coleman camp shovels you're probably familiar with. It is closer to a garden spade. Folded, it will literally almost fit into your pocket, actually will fit into a larger ski jacket pocket. The blade is smaller than my (adult male) hand, including fingers. I bought this to put in my trunk for digging my car out in an emergency ... it is just barely big enough to be useful for that purpose.
So, if the size is appropriate for your needs, this is a great shovel.
Customer Review: Best little shovel Summary: 5 Stars
First of all this shovel is much smaller than I thought when I ordered it - it is definitely a mini. It is still much bigger and heavier than I prefer for backpacking but for regular camping trips and keeping in your vehicle for emergencies it is perfect. It folds down to almost the size of the spade since the handle extends and the hammer feature works great. And it is tough and solid like all Gerber products. I've used the cheap no-name folding shovels and they don't hold a candle to this little one. I will probably get one for each vehicle.
Customer Review: Best little shovel I could ever own... Summary: 5 Stars
This one is the best, strong and can be used as a hammer. Will hold up to multiple impacts and abuse over the years, great for digging a firepit or pounding in tent stakes with the hammer on the opposite side the shovel. For $20.00 plus a little for shipping (free with purchase of 25 or more on amazon) it's compact and will be the last "LITTLE" shovel I will ever own. Will buy one as a gift in the future.
Also the nylon zip tie bag is worth a good $5.00 alone!
