Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 22-47162 Fast Draw Spring Assisted Opening Stainless Steel Fine Edge KnifeCustomer Review: A great knife and a great value. Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this knife to replace my primary knife I carry after I recently lost it in the field. I haven't owned this knife too long, but I do want to share my initial reactions.
Pros:
Tight and sturdy hinge - solid hinge while still allowing smooth movement; seems like it will hold up.
Well designed thumb studs - ergonomic without being too big and snagging on your pocket.
Lightweight - plastic sides covering steel frame.
Sturdy spring steel pocket clip - removable if you don't like the clip.
Great value - Gerber knives are not in the same league as their prices.
Cons:
Wasn't very sharp out of the box - Gerber's sharpen up nice and take an edge, so it wasn't a deal-breaker for me.
The finger release is kind of hard to use - you can either use the thumb stud (which works awesome) or the finger release with your index finger, but unfortunately I find the finger release to be really hard to work.
The button lock is kind of weird - it does exactly what it is supposed to do, but it takes some getting used to.
The bottom line: This is a great knife to use as a daily carry. You might need to sharpen it up at first, but it seems tough as nails and should serve you well for a long time.
Customer Review: An outstanding blade Summary: 5 Stars
Gerber's knives have always been my favorites. Ever since the introduction of the LST series, I have carried a synthetic-gripped Gerber in my pocket. This self-opener is a spear-point with a stout enough tip to preclude easy breakage. Both the full-size Fast Draw and its miniature cousin are built strongly enough for average service, and open efficiently and smartly on demand. Sadly, the line is made in China, but the quality of both blade and grip are quite good. This knife would cost at least twice what I paid if it were made in the U.S., so I will swallow my jingoism and carry it happily.
Customer Review: Best Designed Knife Currently Available Summary: 4 Stars
This knife is designed perfectly.
The safety is a much needed feature to prevent the knife from opening in your pocket. The button for the safety is ergonomically located so you can unlock the knife with your thumb and then more right to the thumb knob to FAST open it.
The hook to hook this knife on your pocked is located at the pointed end of the knife when it's folded. This is also very important if you carry it in your right pocked because if the knife accidentally opened it would open outward instead of inward towards your leg.
I own the serrated version and would recomend it vs non serrated. I've needed the serrated feature more than I've needed a longer non serrated blade area.
The only downside to this knife is the outer sheath is PLASTIC. What were they thinking?!? I would gladly pay an extra $25 to have solid steel. This is why I rated it 4 stars vs 5.
In the next version I would expect all steel and maybe some additional tools like a flat head screwdriver that would not increase the size of the knife.
Until that happens this is the best designed knife available.
Customer Review: Disappointed... Summary: 3 Stars
I had high hopes for the Gerber FAST Draw. For a while, it was my EDC (Every Day Carry) knife. It was soon replaced by another.
After I removed the knife from its packaging, the blade was slightly loose from the handle and wiggled. This made me question its reliability in the future. With prolonged use, the blade started becoming more and more detached from the handle to the point where I had to store it and start using one of my other knives.
Also, the blade's safety located on the handle eventually just stopped working on me.
On a positive note, the Gerber FAST Draw does deserve the title it is given; this knife opens very quickly. The blade comes very sharp out of the box as well. However, reliability is key and these factors mean nothing if your knife is going to crap out on you in the future.
I would tell a friend to avoid purchasing this knife.
Customer Review: Does pretty much everything you could hope it could do Summary: 4 Stars
I would easily recommend this knife to anybody who thinks it would be nice to have.
The opening mechanism is slick and effective without coming off as automatically scary or threatening when used sensibly. I think this knife could be considered a good safety item for someone that spends a lot of time in a boat, air plane, or pretty much any vehicle. If you are ever caught in a situation where you only have one hand/arm available and you need to cut something, like if you were in an accident and needed to cut a seatbelt off but its holding down one arm, this would be the knife to have, and its small enough to always be near and not take up a lot of space or add a lot of weight.
The one thing keeping this knife from getting 5 stars, and it is kind of a big one is that it is easily possible for the knife to open when the lock is in place, its more like a spring off button then a true lock. Compounding this problem is that once the knife opens enough the lock is disengaged and the knife is "fully loaded" and ready to spring back open at any time.
