Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 22-47162 Fast Draw Spring Assisted Opening Stainless Steel Fine Edge KnifeCustomer Review: Great knife, safety lock is a bit "sticky" Summary: 4 Stars
I like the knife a lot. It seems well made, was very sharp "out of the box", and is generally easy to open.
My only (minor) complaint is the combined safety/lock switch. The sliding switch in its "safe" position will keep the blade from opening (if closed) or closing (if open). But what I am finding is that, not infrequently, I cannot open the knife even if the safety is, apparently, off. I then have to thumb it back and forth to get it unlocked. Not a big deal... It only takes a second and one can still do it one-handed but it is a minor irritation.
Customer Review: Great pocket knife Summary: 5 Stars
This knife has a safety switch, which you have to push up to open. You then can open it, and then the fun begins, with the spring-assisted opening taking over to flip completely open.
Because of the safety switch, this knife is less likely to open accidentally in a pocket than most knives.
This is a larger knife, with the handle that fits my hand nicely.
Customer Review: Husband Loves It Summary: 5 Stars
My husband was looking for a light weight knife to carry in his pocket when he opens boxes and what not for work. Normally this has to be done one handed so he needed something easy to open with one hand. This has fit the bill perfectly. Super sharp too. Good locking mechanism all easily one hand-able.
Customer Review: Just OK Summary: 3 Stars
The Gerber Fast Draw is a good knife, but the one flaw that stands out to me is the button located on the left side. This button is used to put the knife on "safety", so it can't be opened accidentally. Also, this button is used to unlock the knife so it can be closed. I don't like where the button is located. I found when trying to open the knife, it was easy to accidentally put the knife on safety while trying to open it. I just don't like the design and much prefer a more conventional placement of the locking mechanism. I have other spring assist knives and have never felt the need to have a "safety" for that matter. For thirty dollars, it's not a bad knife. But, I probably wouldn't buy it again just because of the button on the side.
Customer Review: Matched set Summary: 5 Stars
I bought the Mini quick draw first and was so impressed with it's feel and function that I bought it's big brother and I can say that I was not disappointed.
Gerber sends excellently sharpened blades from the factory. With only minor honing and polishing, this knife takes a truly frighteningly sharp edge and holds it for a very long time. The workings are a bit slower than the Mini due to the greater mass in the Quick Draw (Sr.) blade.
One of the complaints I've consistently read for both models of these knives is that they "can open in your pocket." I believe this to be Liberalistic Chicken Little'ism rather than any factual based experience.
Both blades must be opened approximately 30 degrees before they'll spring and there is a distinct CLICK in the locking mechanism JUST before this point is reached.
Certainly, one must be cautious with such an implement, but we do not need to create the impression of danger where there is none and only nominal "common sense" is required for safe function.
