Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gilmour RM30 20-Inch Reel Mower with Grass Catcher

Customer Review: BEST LAWN MOWER I EVER HAD!!... till I used it.
Summary: 1 Stars

Last time I mowed, I had to stop halfway through the mowing due to engine problems, leaving half my lawn short and half long. I bought this mower so I didn't have to worry about engine problems.

For the short side, which had been cut about 4 days prior to my first "manual mowing", this mower cut fine... if you don't have a problem with going over the grass a couple times. For the long side (which had been sitting for about a week and a half), it did more "combing" than cutting! I had to go over it several times and in several different directions before it looked decent.

Then comes the GREAT part! After sweating for almost an hour and not even getting half my lawn done, the darn thing fell apart on me! Even though I read and followed the not-so-detailed assembly instructions, the bolts came loose and all but one of the nuts got lost in my lawn!

Forget about the noise; the self-sharpening feature is quite handy.
Forget about the tire smell; it's fine once it's aired out.
But everything else? What a waste of my time! I had it for a total of about 3 hours before it was back in the box, taped up and handed to the mailman. And now I have to wait weeks for my refund to go through!

Customer Review: Best push reel mower I have used!
Summary: 5 Stars

Greetings,

I have used both the Gilmore and the Scott 20" push spiral reel mowers, and I prefer the Gilmore, for several reasons:

First is the spring-loaded blade adjuster on the Gilmore -- it is dead simple to adjust properly. The Scott has two locking screws on each side, so you definitely have to try a few times to get it adjusted right, and you have to do it again part way through the season.

Second reason is the ball bearings -- it is just easier to push.

Third reason is the handle on the Gilmore is better and more rigid -- the Scott handle tends to twist a little when you are pushing it.

I also like the grass catcher (if and when you need it) and the fact that you can easily remove the handle for compact storage and transport.

So, the Scott 20" mower works fine, but the Gilmore 20" is a better mower overall, in my opinion.

Sincerely, Neil

Customer Review: Better than I expected!
Summary: 5 Stars

I spent months looking at all the different reel mowers before buying one for my new house. I wanted to get a reel mower, not for the environmental reason, but because the noise and hassle of a gas mower wasn't something I wanted to take on. I settled on this model because of the reviews saying the bearings were nice, and it was more robustly built than the Scott's with its nylon gears. Since I'd done my research, I expected to get a mower that would cut grass, leave some spots, and not touch any weeds/leaves. I was prepared for that. Surprisingly, this thing actually shears off about half of the dandelions I've come across, neatly shears off broadleaf weeds, and has cut up leaves I'm too lazy to rake up. Our lawn is awfully bumpy, and this mower doesn't miss a beat. Even as the wheels bounce around on the ruts and bumps, the blades keep on whirring.

The noise? Yeah, it's noisy. Screeching metal on metal. I wish it were quieter, but I can deal with it.

Customer Review: Broke within a month
Summary: 2 Stars

There appear to be some serious quality control issues with this mower. As other reviewers have mentioned, my mower started making a horrible screeching noise and binding up within the first couple times I used it. After a month, it became totally unusable. No amount of oiling or adjustment would fix it.

On a more general note, anybody looking at a reel mower should consider that these mowers have about 3" of "dead space" to either side of the blade where the wheels are. The mower won't cut anything that's in this space, so navigating edging and mowing around trees can be very difficult.

Customer Review: Cuts OK but L O U D!
Summary: 3 Stars

I just finished mowing my very large lawn with the Gilmour 20 Inch Reel Mower. It seems to cut the grass OK but I had to go over some areas many
times and I ended up pulling up the grass by hand. But for the most part it did a decent job of cutting my grass. I must also add that I raked my yard first since I knew that all reel mowers don't mow very well if the yard has sticks and pine cones lying around; they tend to stop the mower in it's tracks if you run over one. However, from the moment I pushed it I noticed a loud squeaking noise coming from the blades. It was almost as loud as my gas mower. I was a little embarrassed to use it since the noise was quite irritating and the neighbors were looking around wondering what that racket was. I thought the noise might lessen the more I used it but it was not the case. After I was finished mowing I put some silcone on the metal strip that the blade brushes against but it never helped. Then I used WD40 and that did lessen the squeaking noise but it is still much louder then I remember the older reel mowers to be.
But I liked the fact that the cutting width was only about 2 inches less than my gas mower so it didn't take much longer to cut my yard. I also liked the fact that I wasn't covered in dirt and grass like I usually am after I'm finished using my gas mower. It also is easier to use around my trees. The grass catcher is also a plus with this mower. When I used the mower without it the grass kept hitting my legs and getting lodged inside my shoes. So overall, it seems to be a good value if you can get past the noise.
