We decided to go "green" with our mower and selected the Gilmour based on good reviews. We have about 1/2 acre of fescue (NC), with large flat areas and parts with a severe slope. I found the slope very difficult with a gas push/self-propelled mower - almost to the point of considering it unsafe for fear of slipping into the mower. Here's the synopsis . . .
Putting it together - easy to put together. Everyone should be able to do it without any problems.
Initial thoughts - I actually found the sounds a little louder than what I expected - although I haven't tried to adjust it yet to see if that would help. It is much less noisy than a gas-mower though.
The cut - I think it cuts fine - the 20" is good and the height adjust is very good as well. I try to cut the grass to 4". At times it will miss a few grass blades and I will have some "strays" standing up in the yard. A run perpendicular to the original direction typically resolves the issues. This mostly occurs on the very hilly portion of the yard. I haven't noticed this on the flat sections.
I haven't noticed any real difference in the time to mow. Maybe it's just that I don't have to turn up the volume on my ipod when I mow now.
I haven't really used the bag catcher except for once to try it out. It did seem fine.
The reel did jam once when it attacked a large pine cone.
Easy to store.
Great to feel more green - and lower the carbon footprint.
I feel it is healthier for the grass - imagine you getting a haircut and the barber saying "we're just going to tear it to the length you need." I understand power mowers tear, and reel mowers cut. After the drought we had 2 yrs ago, I'm still trying to get our grass to recover, so that makes me feel better too.
Storing the unit is a breeze, and other reviewers are right that the garage has lost it's previous "gassy" smell.
Movement - I find the ability to use the unit on hills much better than a gas or even a self-propelled unit. It's relatively light - and easy to move.
I would recommend this unit and would purchase it again.

My yard is shrinking (<4000 sf grass) and I didn't want to have to deal with the hassles of a gas mower anymore. That, and a strong desire to go "green" convinced me to try this mower. Never having tried a reel mower before, I didn't know what to expect. I purposed waited until I had had an entire summer of mowing with this unit before I submitted this evaluation, just to be fair. The first time I used this unit, I thoroughly enjoyed mowing the yard!! The novelty has worn off after approximately 8 uses, but the unit still does a beautiful job on our lawn and I intend to use it forevermore and rid ourselves of our gas mower for good.
I have nothing but high praises for this mower. I do miss the "vacuum" effect of my gas mower in terms of collecting leaves, pine needles, and anything else that may be lying around. I've heard people complain that you have to cut your yard practically every-other-day with a reel mower to keep it from getting bogged down by heavy grass. The worst case that I've found is that I have to go over 1-2 select areas twice to completely cut every blade....and that's after not mowing for 3+ weeks!
Anyways....if you are thinking about switching to a hand powered reel mower, do it! This is a fantastic unit that will do a great job of cutting your lawn and help reduce your carbon footprint as well.

Exceeded expectations. We've used push reel mowers for years (new and used). This is the best so far. It does not tear grass as previous push reel mowers have done. Lawn looks healthier as grass is clean cut (less ripping). It is louder than other push reel mowers we have had--people have noted the noise level in other reviews--but quieter compared to gas-/electric-powered mowers and that one quirky factor doesn't lessen our satisfaction w/the product.

We are well pleased with the Gilmour push Mower. It arrived quickly and was easy and quick to assemble the handle assembly. It works very well, is easy to use, cuts well, and you can flip the handle back the other way to roll in the other direction silently with ease without the blades turning ( to roll from garage to lawn area). After checking several local hardware stores and department stores,I decided to check buying a hand lawn mower on Amazon.com. After checking the reviews and checking the prices, decided to order the Gilmour RM30 model. One of the plus factors in choosing this model was that the grass catcher is included. Although the mower is noisy when it is mowing the grass, it is easy to put together and does a good job of cutting the grass.
