Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gilmour RM30 20-Inch Reel Mower with Grass CatcherCustomer Review: Good mower Summary: 3 Stars
The mower works great, but adjusting the blade before the first use was a pain. The instructions are not accurate, and it's my fist time owning a lawn mower so it took some trial and error to figure it out. Having a grass catcher is convenient, however, I don't plan to use it much as it's better to return the clippings to the lawn and it slows the mowing down considerably having to stop frequently to empty the clippings. It might be better if the grass catcher held a larger volume of grass. Overall it'a basically like every other reel mower I've used. It's great for the environment, cuts the grass well, is quiet and is a great way to get some excercise. For the price, however, it's now practically possible to get battery powered mower....
Customer Review: Good value Summary: 4 Stars
I have not used the mower too many times yet, but it definitely does the job on my tiny yard. I was all about getting the maximum width for my price, but with the teeny size of my yard I probably could have gotten a smaller mower for the little spaces I have to get into. However, this mower perfoms very well--it was a breeze to set up, and the blades easily raise and lower. The grass catcher gets most everything, although sometimes it takes a little sweep of the back of the mower to get everything moving into the catcher. All in all, great product.
Customer Review: Great Mower Summary: 4 Stars
I love my push mower . The best thing is that it works from kid power. In the past my G/daughter who's 12 would just stay in the house. Now she thinks it's fun to mow the lawn. All the grass from the catcher goes into the compose bin. I should have bought one of these years ago.
Customer Review: Great back=up mower Summary: 4 Stars
Got this mower after searching around for the best deal. 1: easy as heck to put together, i did it in less than 5 minutes. 2: takes up very little room wherever you might store it. 3: Used it once so far, and it's loud. and the harder or faster you go the louder it is. This is a negative it is louder than my electric mower. my electric mower needs a tune up and new battery and i don't really want to invest in trying to find a battery for an older Husauvana (no longer make) model. it cuts very nicely, the grass doesn't go into the bag it sort of gets stuck behind the mower and you have to push it in. and your yard must be free of debris totally before beginning b/c the slightest piece of wood or debris other than grass will get caught and the mower wont mow. Overall very well made, solid and cuts nicely on all five of the blade adjustments. I will have this around for a long time. Also its not that hard to push, we have a small yard, Mobile home, and it goes through the grass easily and the back wheels make it easy, i barely broke a sweat.
Customer Review: Great for meeting people Summary: 4 Stars
When I used my gas mower, pedestrians usually crossed to the other side of the street -- this mower attracts them. Dog walkers, moms with strollers, college students, runners, gadget-guys, reminiscing seniors all stop to talk about the Gilmour.
Although the mower isn't silent, it's quiet enough that I don't have to stop mowing to talk with them. It doesn't fling clippings, so I can keep mowing without worrying about hitting anyone with debris.
Mowing the five foot wide strip of lawn between the sidewalk and street is easy. The levers make it simple to quickly adjust the mowing height and the 20 inch reel cuts a nice strip in each pass. The mower is heavy enough to keep the blades in position and light enough to easily push during a long mowing session. I gave up on the grass catcher because it gets snagged. However, the grass doesn't get thrown onto the pavement and the cut grass is small enough to blend into the lawn, so I don't need to sweep or rake. After I mowed that strip the first time, I had to call Gilmour customer service. The bolts had fallen out and they also blended nicely into the lawn. Gilmour answered the phone immediately; the person I spoke with took my address--no transferring, no proving I was a customer, no hassles. The packet of nuts and bolts arrived in three days and after using some Loctite they've stayed secure.
Now the challenges. My backyard is what realtors call a "park-like setting:" many trees, large tree roots, bushes, uneven ground surrounded by a fence. My gas push mower handled all these things--over the roots, under the bushes, along the fence, up and down and all around--no problem. I've given up trying to get the Gilmour to work here. I go to the shed, lift the mower by the lower bar and carry it through the backyard. On the plus side, it's not too heavy, there's no messy gas or oil, it's narrow enough for me to walk through the gate, and the metal shell keeps the blades away from my fingers and my leg.
When I mow the front lawn, conditions have to be perfect. It doesn't like dew-wet grass. Every coffee-stirrer-thick twig jams the reel. Other reviewers mentioned pulling back to dislodge them, I have to tease them out by hand and some really get wedged. Despite repeated swipes, I have to use a hand-clipper on any tall grass or weeds. For the first mowing of the season, I always face dozens of tree seedlings. The mower apparently thinks they're as adorable as I do, since it won't hurt them in anyway. They get pushed down by the mower and pop right back up -- like something in a video game or kids' musical. On level, debris-free areas of five inch or shorter grass the results are lovely--smoothly trimmed grass, no clumping, no need to sweep. The mower seems well-made and shows very little wear or tear after hours of use. The mower never needs gas, oil, spark plugs and, so far, no sharpening, so it's always ready to go.
If you have an ideal mowing situation, the Gilmour will give you pretty results and a chance to meet new friends.
