Tools and Hardware Reviews of Glisten Dishwasher Cleaner

Customer Review: A little pricey but works.
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought one of these. It removed some of the scale from my dishwasher and certainly made a big difference (hence the 5 stars) but for $5, I probably needed several to actually get the dang thing clean. So I bought a new dishwasher.

Customer Review: Amazing
Summary: 4 Stars

My dishwasher wasn't as gross looking as the picture on the box, but after one use the racks rolled out smoother. I couldn't believe how well it worked cutting through the hard water stains/deposits. I'll definitely purchase this again.

Customer Review: Best Product EVER!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm in Jacksonville FL with some of the hardest water you can imagine. Laundry whites are grey, colors are drab... dishwasher was so gunked up with soap scum and hard water deposits for over ten years, I wanted to scream. We were all set to go out and buy a new dishwasher when my NY sister (same awful hard water - maybe hers is worse) told me about Glisten. OMG - whoever invented this stuff needs to market it worldwide! It actually took three washes to rid my dishwasher of all the gunk, and I did have to go in and manually chip off some of the hardened stuff. I told my sister about the bathtub use and she tried it and cried with happy tears!! Thank you, thank you. Purchase yours in the 12 pk - way cheaper.

Customer Review: Better Than Homemade Cleaners
Summary: 5 Stars

For some, running vinegar through a dishwashing cycle may be enough to clean the hard water deposits from the dishwasher's interior, but for me Glisten was a substantial improvement over the various home remedies I've tried. I live in an area of very hard water, and the spray jets in my dishwasher clog up pretty frequently. Glisten cleans everything with just one application. Before I realized it was calcium deposits clogging up the dishwasher, I'd had a repairman come out to see what was causing the dishes to stay dirty even after running them through full cycles. The repairman cleaned the entire interior by hand. The results I've had with Glisten are as good as I had after that manual cleaning. It's worth trying vinegar or lemon juice or some other low-cost remedy to see if that does an adequate job on your dishwasher. If it doesn't, then Glisten is well worth the cost.

Customer Review: Cheaper Alternatives Work Just As Well
Summary: 3 Stars

I like everything about Glisten except the cost. Glisten removes hardwater stains (deposits of calcium, magnesium and iron) by using citric acid as its active ingredient. White vinegar also removes hardwater stains because(you guessed it) it's acidic, although the concentration is too weak to do a perfect job. Bleach and baking soda don't work because they are alkaline. Looking for a cheaper version of Glisten? Run your dishwasher with the detergent cup filled with citric acid crystals. You can pay buy citric acid crystals direct from GE and Maytag (part# WD35X151), but it's smarter to shop the internet. Citric acid crystals are widely available on the internet for 1/10th the cost of Glisten (for example, google National Chemical Inc.). Citric acid is also sold as "sour salt" in the canning or spice section of the supermarket, but may be expensive in such small quantities.
