I use it as backlighting for my desk when I'm writing code at night (eases eye strain). It works, but the plastic is very stiff and difficult to hang properly if you aren't going to secure it with something permanent (read: brackets and/or staples/nails). It was defective on arrival. First of all, not all of the lights were lit up. Only 1/3 of the lights were on unless you held it at a perfect angle in which the other 2/3rds of the light rope would flash on and off.Customer Review: Dim decoration.

I thought 10' of these little lights would be enough to see stuff by, but it's quite dim. It is like a 10' long night light. A nice decoration
Also as you move the rope around the lights flicker which makes me fear they are not held together well in there.

I followed one reviewers suggestion and turned the lights on for some time before installing them. It definitely helped. The plastic casing was much easier to work with once it was slightly heated.
I used these in my Son's room. I purchased 2 sets. One was installed inside the closet for lighting which worked out wonderfully and the other was installed on the bottom of his bunk bed for lighting the bottom bunk. It worked out great and he loves them!

I was very happy when I received the three 12 ft. rope lights. They were installed and turned on for a several hours and turned off. The next evening they were turned on and one of the three ropes failed to turn on completely. There was a big blank space with no shining lights.
