Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell HW-628 Enviracaire Twin Window Fan

Customer Review: Amazing results
Summary: 5 Stars

Almost worked too well but of course that isn't possible. I placed it in window at top of stairs and outside my bedroom. Either had both blowing out or removed and closed window during the day. At night I opened my bedroom door and had the one fan blowing in and pointed at my room and the other blowing out and set the temperature setting appropriately and was cool but never too cold.

Customer Review: An adorable fan
Summary: 5 Stars

I had this unit for about a month now and it has been it has been a workhorse in keeping me cool this summer. It has a slight audible whine and increases somewhat at higher speeds but not enough to disturb me (I had been using a 20 inch box fan that moves about the same amount of air for a penalty of 3 times the noise and didn't even fit in my window). I appreciate the temperature control which stops the rotation of the propellers when it reaches your adjusted setting then restarts them when the air goes above your comfort level. I highly recommend this unit as an alternative to running a power guzzling air conditioner.

Customer Review: Annoying Rattle
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased this fan and really like the overall design. I like that you can remove the grills for cleaning and it is pretty compact. But one fan is "quiet" and the other has an extreme rattle. Unfortunately, I already threw out the box, so I can't return it. I have to replace this item and will be hesitant to buy another product from this manufacturer.

Customer Review: Appears better
Summary: 4 Stars

Lightweight, serviceable product with a well known & respected name on it.
Only time will tell how well the unit holds up. Prior unit (different manufacturer) did not last 2 seasons. Expecting more from a Honeywell product.

Customer Review: As Advertised
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this product a couple of weeks ago because I finally realized that the reason my room became so hot at night was because I live next to the boiler room in my campus residence hall (in Northern California, temperatures get down to the 50's during this time of the year, yet my room felt like 80's). I was very glad to see that there were plenty of setups for the fans- I hadn't even thought that you could use one fan for intake and one for exhaust, so that air would properly CIRCULATE throughout the room and not just blow inwards. It was very easy to setup and the fan has provided a considerate change in the atmoshpere of my room - I can now sleep at night!!! Also, be aware that for best results, you should mount it vertically and not horizontally (using the mounts included) so that the hot air is exhausted (hot air rises) and fresh air comes in through the lower fan.

This is not an exhaust fan. Obviously, trying to use this unit for the purpose of exhausting smoke out of a room will fail unless placed at a high altittude inside the room - in which case that is probably not possible since most windows don't go all the way up.

The only reason this product receives 4 stars is that I wish there was a stronger and maybe quieter fan by the company (not the product's fault, but still). I know my 3x3 inch CPU heatsink/fan cost the same thing as this whole unit, and I wouldn't mind paying a little extra to get the performance that I received from my CPU HSF. Also, there is a "Temperature Control" knob on the unit that is completely useless.... the fan is either on or off, there is no "control" on how fast the blades rotate (other than the low, high and super settings). I felt this was some sort of brainwashing scheme by the company and didn't appreciate it (if you read "temperature control" then you may "think" you're controlling the temperature... or whatever). Also, they were lazy enough to make the "Low" temperature so that it would be on the side were the temperature would actually increase (because the fan rotates at a lower speed) and vice versa with the "High" temperature setting... If you're going to con us, at least do it right, don't you think?

Overall, the unit performs well, do be aware though that if you have very hot air inside the room, and very hot air OUTSIDE the room... you probably won't be getting much of a temperature change with this unit.

As a side note, this fan does emmit much less sound than my roommates other Honeywell fan, the 10 inch one, which I think is ridiculous since I'm sure this one perfoms much better.
