Customer Review: Best Value for the Money. Summary: 5 Stars
I broke these muffs in today at the outdoor firing range with approximately 30 other officers firing handguns. I say broke in because I was out there on the line for 6 hours. I was intially hesitant to use them without some "inner ear" protection so I used a pair of cheap foam protectors underneath. I was surprised at how much conversation I could still hear with the amplifiers on high. I could clearly hear the range officers commands as well as conversations directy on either side of me. Naturally it wasn't as crisp and loud as without the inner ears but I was still impressed. When the shots rang, they were definately muffled and I didn't noticed the delay time others have talked about. Once I became comfortable with their performance, I removed the inner ears and just used the Leight earmuffs. I could hear anybody who talked. Amazing amplification. No buzzing or hissing. Then the shots rang. Not bad. It was still somewhat loud but did not hurt my ears. I am not sure what 82db sounds like but am taking their word for it that it reduces noise levels to that. Several other officers had Peltors and I wish I had tried those out just to compare, but I didn't. All in all I am very pleased with this purchase and feel they are well worth the money spent. I do prefer to have the inner foam ears as well, but I have always been overly cautious about my hearing. If you are using these on an indoor range, I would probably recommend the inner ears as well. For those not as cautious, the Leights by themselves work great.
Customer Review: Best electronic hearing protection for the price Summary: 5 Stars
I've had a few different sub-$100 brands of Electronic hearing protection including a few different sets of Peltors. While they were "sufficient" for the job, they sounded tinny and during long range days were just flat out uncomfortable.
After researching I was beginning to think my only option was a far more expensive $200+ set such as those used by the military. Then I came across the Impact Sports muffs and doubt I'll ever look back. The reviews of the long term durability show that they are a quality piece of equipment and if the short time that I've had my pair is any indicator, this set should last a good long time. The reaction time of the electronics is excellent and while I still keep a pair of custom fit ear plugs in the bag, I've not worn them since buying these muffs! The input port works really well with the small short range walkie talkies and even my Android when listening to music! The price point is amazingly low for the quality of then offering. As a part time shooting instructor, I often recommend these to my students now.
Customer Review: Best performance and value balance on the market! Summary: 5 Stars
There are definitely more expensive units, and while most perform reasonably well -- this balance is hard to beat. Some of the more expensive units are less rugged, and sweating inside their earcips cause corrosion on the battery contacts. Others are nearly five times the price and require gel ear cups for extended wear. You can pay more, but the difference in cost will never equal the value of these hearing protectors.
Customer Review: Best product out there Summary: 5 Stars
After reading so many bad reviews about electronic earmuffs I was delighted to find so many good reviews on this model. My last pair was huge, heavy, and never worked very well. When a loud report came in, my old pair would take a long time to shut off the amplifier and a long time to turn it back on - making them almost useless for blocking noise while momentarily making deaf for a few seconds.
By contrast, this pair responds very fast. The amplifier shuts off immediately and comes back on quickly - so much so that you might not know they're working. Yet, it's doing what it's supposed to do - filtering out the loud reports.
There are a few design features which are marvelous but needs some getting used and not quite explained in the manual. The first surprise was the AGC - Automatic Gain Control. After turning up the volume in a quiet room I found it amplifying sounds 10x above normal. I could hear the creaking in the floor boards until I turned it back down. But, at the range things were different - the headphones will adjust themselves to the ambient noise quite well.
As I've read in another review elsewhere, I heard a cyclic buzzing sound in the left ear: buzz.... buzz.... buzz.... I wasn't sure if I read this to be a problem with this model or if I was reading a review on another model. Let me save you some hassles. The buzzing was present only when I was standing close to my cable TV box. Once I moved to another room the buzzing went away entirely. This is an RF shielding problem with the cable box provided by FIOS and should not be a problem with normal use.
Other nice features - automatic shut-off. More times than I care to admit, I forget to turn off my headphones and drained the battery. No longer a problem.
Lightweight - these are actually a bit thinner than non-electronic model hearing protectors, look great, and fold up compact. Now you won't look like a total geek on the firing line.
Highly directional microphones facing backwards. This one took me a while to get used to. Most of the amplified sounds are coming from behind me. This makes great sense since anyone talking to me will be behind me at the firing range. The only thing in front of me is a big, loud, noisy gun so the microphones naturally point backwards.
Aux input jack. The headphone comes with a patch cord (and fresh batteries). I tried this with my iPhone and was pleasantly surprised how well this worked. With a combination of the volume on the iPhone (or iPod) and volume on the headphones you can strike a good balance between ambient noise, conversation, and your "tunes." At the range, however, I declined to take advantage of playing music while shooting because I thought it might be too distracting. I might try it in the future. One caveat - don't expect high fidelity while playing music. I get a "decent" sound from my iPhone using the Aux input jack but no where near as nice a pair of regular headphones.
Sweet-looking volume control. Nothing says "geek" like a volume control knob sticking straight out. But the volume control on/off switch is recessed in a stylish manner which just looks great. This also reduces the chance that you'll break it off when you stuff them into your bag.
This is the best electronic headphones I've ever used. The price is great. Amazon is the place to buy it. If you're looking for headphones for the gun range which will both protect your hearing while allowing you have normal spoken conversation you can't do any better than these.
