I had high hopes for these ear muffs after reading all of the sparkling reviews, but I am glad that I had some ear plugs in my range bag to supplement the poor hearing protection that these provide. Yes, they do a great job of amplifying. I found, however, that at an indoor range with many people shooting that the electronic dampening was almost always activated . I was still sticking an ear next to peoples mouths so I could hear them speak to me. As far as being able to hear range commands, that wasn't a problem as they were amplified as they usually are at a gun range. Kind of feel misled about their effectiveness. I should've gone with instincts as I wondered how could something so thin work at the level that many have claimed in these reviews. I'll be back to stuffing my ungainly - but effective - 3M's into my bag. I only hope I can return these to Amazon for a refund.Customer Review: Better than I expected

As someone who uses firearms in my career, I need quality shooting equipment. I have, for years, put off buying electronic earmuffs because of their price so I made do with my standard ear protection. I was given a pair of non-electronic Howard Leight earmuffs and I was happy with the quality and level of protection they afforded me. I came across these while shopping for christmas gifts, and was surprised at the low price. I admit I was a little hesitant to buy them, because of the price, but the reviews were mostly positive and I was already convinced of the quality of Howard Leight products so I went ahead and ordered a pair for my wife and I. Here are my impressions; First - yup, not very effective at the indoor range, BUT from what I have been told, no brand works well at an indoor range. Outdoors, well they work very well and the slim profile makes them ideal for using with rifles. I can go with my side arm and transition to my rifle without thinking about keeping the buttstock from coming into contact with the ear protection. As far as the feature that allows me to plug in my MP3? I tried it and it works fine, I did not get any static but to be honest, I could care less as I do not listen to music while shooting. The hearing amplification is awesome, I can hear even faint noises clear as a bell. The quality of the construction and the design is what I expected from Howard Leight, very well put together but only time will tell as to their durabilty but I expect to have these for a very long time. The price only sweetens the deal. I would, and already have, recommend these without hesitation.Customer Review: Better than you would expect

I thought these would be "OK" for the price compared to some of the high dollar versions available. I have taken them out shooting several times now and its phenomenal how well they work, exactly as you would want. My only complaint is not a complaint when you adjust so you can hear voices if you put it above 3/4 it's very loud from the amplification. Shuts down loud noises before you can even notice. These are great for slightly more than some standard non electronic. These are very comfortable to wear for extended periods. You won't be sorry if you buy these. Although the product is advertised to suppress noise exceeding an 82db threshold, noise generated by air compressors, lawn mowers, power saws, etc. is NOT effectively suppressed. They do work effectively with impact noise, e.g. hammers, presses, and firearms.
So if you plan to use them on a lawn mower while listening to your ipod or iphone, forget it. It aint gonna happen.
