Tools and Hardware Reviews of Hunter 22434 Sontera Three-Light 52-Inch Five-Blade Ceiling Fan, White with Frosted Globes

Customer Review: Excellent Fan
Summary: 5 Stars

My father-in-law and I installed this fan in about 3 hours although we took a few breaks. Over all the instructions were very detailed and we had no troubles with the installation. If you have other remote-controlled fans in your home make sure you change the jumper settings other wise you may be controlling more than one fan with the same remote. We have a similar fan in another room so I checked the jumper settings in that fan (just remove the remote batterry cover to see those settings)before we installed this fan. Excellent fan!! Very pleased!!

Customer Review: Excellent!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great fan for the price. I have other Hunter fans and they last forever. The fan is great for a medium size room, the options are perfect. The remote control is user friendly. This fan is simple, practical, and worth the investment.

Customer Review: Good buy
Summary: 4 Stars

This was a good buy since it was much cheaper than at the stores for the same model and brand. The fan is very quiet. This fan replaced another fan so the instillation was easy.

Customer Review: Hunter 22434 52" Fan w/ light kit & remote
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased 3 of these fans. 2 of which were missing the globes for the light kit. The boxes did not appear to have been opened previously. Per the instructions I have contacted Hunter for replacements. Will upgrade the rating if they replace the missing globes for free.

As for the fan itself. Like many other reviewers. I have been installing fans for years and would consider myself a well accomplished fan installer. I have even added aftermarket RF controllers after the fact on fans previously. The first fan to install did give me some real frustration... don't know if blaming it on the instruction manual, the RF receiver that mounts in the canopy ... or what. I can only say it was a bit tricky, frustrating and tried my patience. Perhaps it was the very short downrod since I was trying to install it as near flush as possible. Either way I did not complete the first fan in a single day (my expectation was to hang all 3 that day.) The following weekend I started fresh with a different fan in a different room. Got the hang of it and wrapped up all 3 in about 7 hrs. Good fan so far... minus the light globes.

Check the RF transmitter code if you are installing more than one of these... All three of mine were set to the same frequency...and it didn't dawn on me to check until I was on the 3rd fan... needless to say, I had to change one after installed... which was very frustrating. You MUST have the power OFF to the fan AND the battery OUT of the remote or the transmitters will not reset when you change the jumpers.

Customer Review: Hunter 22434 Sontera Three-Light 52-Inch Five-Blade Ceiling Fan
Summary: 2 Stars

I attempted to attach this fan to an "old work" fan brace box that I had installed in a finished ceiling years ago. Hunter's remote control module must mount completely flush within Hunter's ceiling bracket in order for the fan canopy to contact the underside of the ceiling and attach properly. My existing fan brace box uses two long threaded bolts that extend below ceiling level and interfere with the positioning of the remote module within the fan bracket. I ended up returning the fan after several frustrating hours trying to install it.

I've installed several dozen fans over the years and have never been so frustrated by a fan. The box I was attempting to attach to has had numerous fixtures installed over the years, including ceiling fans and chandeliers, without issue. Its obvious Hunter didn't want to modify anything in their 'standard' installation hardware package to accommodate the remote receiver; thus, the 'form fitting' receiver case that has zero clearance between the mounting bracket and canopy. This fan will work fine in some instances, but not in situations where the fan brace box hardware extends even a quarter inch into the canopy area.

I returned the fan to Amazon for a full refund (nice!), and picked up a Harbor Breeze fan with remote from the local Lowe's - no more clearance problem.
