Tools and Hardware Reviews of Hunter 44550 Auto Save 7-Day Programmable Thermostat

Customer Review: Great Product
Summary: 5 Stars

We've had programmable thermostats for years, so we are familiar with the features that we like and what we use. This one went a step further with the HOME mode. Older thermostats that we had needed to readjusted every time it went into the next time phase if it was not a desirable temperature while we were not at work. The filter alert is also great and being able to check hours that it's been running helps us see where we need to tweak our temperatures a bit to lower our usage. Very easy to use. Husband connected it in no time with little effort. Instructions are easy to follow. Would definitely buy again

Customer Review: Great Programmable Thermostat - Good money saver in more ways than you might think when optimally used
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great programmable thermostat. I moved to a new location about 3yrs ago. They had some basic level mechanical thermostat's upstairs and down. I've been using programmable thermostats since '96 when I got my first apartment. I'm now in a 2 story house w/ separate Heat and AC, so I did some research as I hadn't bought one in a while and the new features looked good, but most important was the 7 day individual programming (old one was weekend and weekday, ok for bachelorhood, not so great for a family w/ schedules that differ day to do.)

I thought great, not a bad price I'll grab 2 of these. Well, it worked out better than I thought. My wife was making me change filters every 3 months (got the regular filters and then HEPA filters at the units themselves (change annually) on the dime no matter how clean or dirty. Well I knew the upstairs unit runs a lot more in the summer and the downstairs unit ran a lot more in the winter, but I wasn't sure how much (she also wanted me to continue using MERV 13 filters at front end at $14 each x3 for the house, x4 per year) anyway, back to the point. The FILTER feature where it keeps track of the usage and starts flashing FILT after 500hrs of usage is great, I convinced my wife that that's when you should actually change it, like a car, it's based on the usage, so now I'm actually down to 3 changes per year upstairs and 2 per year downstairs (also got down to MERV 7 filters at $3 ea but that's another story) so that in itself will pay for the units over time (not to mention the energy savings of not using it while you don't need to.)

Another great feature is the Auto Recovery - Didn't know what it was when I first saw RECV on the display. I had been setting it to cool down / heat up the house 30min's prior to getting home (wife son getting home) and 15 mins before we woke up in the mornings. Well I looked it up. It does this thinking for you, not only that but it adjust how early to come on based on the temp differential, so on mild mornings it's not wasting extra energy. Nice, more money in the bank.

Customer Review: Great Thermostat !!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had several programmable thermostats, like White, Honeywell, etc...and this one by Hunter is really good. I bought a Honeywell 2-day/5-day unit last year, and it was difficult to program, and after I programmed it, it had a mind of its own. I am a electronics tech, and am very technical. This Hunter unit is very easy to program and works great. I havn't had to touch it since I programmed it, last month. Just a graet unit, and the price is very good thru Amazon. $79 in Lowe's I think.

Customer Review: Great controller
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the second one I've owned. Unfortunately, the first one died after about three years. But I liked the old one enough to buy an exact replacement. That's about as good an endorsement as I can think of.

The default program features an energy efficient schedule that keeps the house temps moderate during the day while you're gone and then turns on the AC/heat in time to make the house comfortable when you get home.

The installation is extremely simple.

The daily use isn't quite as simple if you want to override the set program. You can bump the temp up or down without too much trouble, but cancelling the override isn't quite as intuitive. Also, making your override "stick" doesn't always seem to work for us. For example, we don't usually sleep with the AC on unless it's too hot to open the windows. So in those cases, we close the windows and override the program to drop the temps. That's fine at bedtime, but then in the middle of the night when the program switches to the next time unit, the override expires and the house heats up. It's not impossible to prevent that, but it's nearly impossible for my pea-brain to remember how to do it without re-reading the manual.

All in all, this controller is great for my household and has saved my family a ton of $$$ during the hot seasons when we have to use the AC.

Customer Review: Great product at a great price

I've been using this thermostat for about a month and love it. Programming isn't bad but I could see some folks-especially those who get scared when facing a panel of buttons-having a little bit of trouble operating it.

As others of said, it's nice that it can be programmed while disconnected... so if you need a while you can do it from the comfort of a chair.

And one more word of warning-watch out for electrostatic discharge(ESD)! The area I live in is particularly dry and most of my place is carpeted... both factors that increase the chance of static buildup. I accidentally zapped my thermostat a couple weeks ago just by reaching to touch the light bar button. I was a bit frustrated to find that all the programming I'd done as well as the energy usage history were gone!

Now I'm just careful not to build up charge around the house... and may get a humidifier. Just something to be aware of.

Also when I first used the light bar (which turns on the Indiglo backlight) I noticed a faint high pitched hum. I've heard from other users as well as Hunter that this hum is normal with Indiglo devices.
