Tools and Hardware Reviews of Hunter 90022 12-Inch Oscillating Table Fan, Satin Black with Brushed NickelCustomer Review: BEAUTIFUL LOOKING... BUT FLAWED IN EVERY OTHER WAY! BUYER BEWARE. DON'T BUY IT. Summary: 1 Stars
This review is based on buying/returning 3 different fans in the course of 2 months.
I'm a visual person (an advertising art director). So of course, I immediately zeroed in on the great looking Hunter fans. A throwback to another era. They looked solidly built and the price was reasonable. Boy did I make a mistake... a big headache of a mistake... and I (stupidly) did it 3 times!
If you buy one of these clunkers, by a look at the other reviews, you'll have a good 50/50 chance of owning a fan that has all these great features:
* The inside gears make a loud click-clicking sound with each back and forth oscillation of the fan
* 2 of the 3 speed settings eventually stopped working
* Pull up oscillation knob rubs against the mental housing making a loud metal-rubbing-against metal sound as the fan oscillates
* Within a short few weeks, even when not oscillating, the inside gears started making very loud constant grinding sounds
* On the high speed setting (the only one that was left working) the motor is so loud you can hardly hear yourself think
* Often when turning the fan on, the blades would have to be hand pushed to get them started moving (I used a kitchen knife inserted in the grill), otherwise the blades wouldn't turn at all
But the fan does have one thing going for it... it sure looks great!
If you're interested, here's the sad tale.
With great anticipate I set up the first fan I received (a great looking Retro Brush Nickel model). Within the first day of use, problems started. The pull knob that controls the oscillating starting rubbing against the medal housing (the knob sticks up through a circular opening in the housing). With each back and forth oscillating motion of the fan, there was a LOUD METAL-RUBBING-AGAINST-METAL SOUND. Then the INSIDE GEARS ALSO STARTED MAKING A LOUD CLICK-CLICKING SOUND. So now I had 2 different sounds competing for my attention. Completely disappointed, but still determined to give it another try, I returned the fan and got a replacement.
So I get the 2nd fan. Same model, same great looks, and with the same old problems... only amplified!!! Besides the PULL KNOB RUBBING PROBLEM, and the GEAR CLICK-CLICKING SOUND that began almost immediately, now the LOW SPEED SETTING STOPPED WORKING within a day or so. Then the next day, the SECOND LOWEST SPEED ALSO DECIDED TO TAKE A VACATION. All I was left with was the high speed (there are 3 speed settings, but now only 1 on my fan!). And the high speed setting isn't a great option, SINCE YOU CAN'T HEAR YOURSELF THINK... WAY TOO LOUD AND DISTURBINGLY NOISY. Doubly discouraged, but still determined, I decided (stupidly) that the model type was the problem and that it wasn't a HUNTER QUALITY CONTROL PROBLEM (which of course it really is).
So I returned the 2nd fan and received a 3rd new fan. This time instead of the still great looking Retro Brushed Nickel fan I originally wanted and liked looking at (but by this time, the glamor was starting to fade), I opted for a White Rockefeller Oscillating fan. With a name like that, what could go wrong. Right? Well you guessed it. Everything went wrong. All the same problems as the first 2 fans: KNOB RUBBING NOISE, GEAR CLICKING SOUND, SPEED SETTINGS FAILURES. And I even kept it long enough to have another thing go wrong: the PULL UP OSCILLATING KNOB CAME RIGHT OFF THE FAN! Didn't really pull it up that hard, it just came off when I tried to stop/start the oscillating.
I kept it for another week, not using the oscillation feature at all, just using the fan. And even then, it STARTED MAKING GRINDING SOUNDS (EVEN WITHOUT OSCILLATING!). Finally, finally, I got the picture and returned this useless piece of clunker metal junk and received a full refund (thank you Amazon).
Lesson I (again) learned in life: just because it's beautiful doesn't make it right for you, you can't tell a book by it's cover, etc. etc. Just stay away from anything Hunter makes and you'll save yourself lots of headaches. I suspect they will soon be out of business with the crap they are selling.
By the way, I wrote the president of the company a short note (after returning the 3rd fan) and asked him for an explanation of all the problems (if he could give me one) and suggested that maybe he should think about returning the manufacturing of the company's fans to America (it's made in China). Surprise, surprise: I never received an answer.
BOTTOM LINE:
DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME BUYING THESE SCRAP HEAP PIECES OF JUNK MASQUERADING AS FANS.
P.S. I want to thank Amazon. They were amazing through all this. Great service, great help. I went through them with all the back and forth returning nonsense. No extra shipping charges at all. So again, thanks Amazon for your no nonsense help in all this. Amazon = super highly rated. Hunter = zero and double zero, they are bad. Really really bad.
Customer Review: Beautiful Fan Summary: 5 Stars
Not only does this fan work as advertised, it is a beautiful addition to the household. All of the plastic fans stick out like a sore thumb. This one seems to belong. Hard to imagine, I'm saying this about a fan. Well worth the price.
Customer Review: Best Table Fan I've Owned Summary: 5 Stars
I just got this fan for Mother's day and although I can't provide a review on durability I can say I'm thrilled with this fan so far. I'm not sure why people are complaining that it's not quiet...it's very quiet - I can hardly hear it on the low setting. I don't mind the whir of the motor on the higher settings anyway, so maybe I'm not a good person to judge this.
I have owned every conceivable type of fan out there but this is the first Hunter. It's sturdy and well made and it's much stronger than any of the plastic fans I've used, regardless of the size. I'm ditching the 12" Lasko fan the Hunter replaces...it's simply awful; cheaply made and not very powerful. Since I use a table fan 24/7 in my bedroom (even with the A/C on) I can say without hesitation this is a quality product and a great buy.
Overall, I am very happy with this fan and believe it's well worth the few extra dollars over the brands you find in the discount stores.
Customer Review: Best fan I have ever bought Summary: 5 Stars
Nice heavy duty fan. This fan is really the best fan I have ever bought. It works as well as any other fan but the difference is that it is constructed quite well with metal parts throughout. I have had cheaper fans fall and break apart because of the plastic build. This will not happen with this fan. The fan works with the expected noise level; not whisper quiet but not very loud either. The looks of the fan are retro, you can picture this fan in the tv show madmen being used as a prop. Great fan, looks great, does it's job, and constructed incredibly well.
Customer Review: Best fan I've ever bought Summary: 5 Stars
Seriously, this is the best fan I've ever purchased - and I've bought a number. I just moved into Senior Housing and while all utilities are included in the rent, the A/C in the bedroom just doesn't cut it during our 100 degree nights.
This Hunter fan is terrific - I had to check twice to be sure I only had it on low because the air circulation is so good. Quieter than the A/C. Highly recommended.
