Tools and Hardware Reviews of ITW Space Bag Vacuum-Seal Storage Bags, Set of 3Customer Review: High hopes - shot down Summary: 3 Stars
I was really excited about using these... my mother in law had been telling me how awesome they were for a year or so and when I started to clean out some closets in my house, I figured they'd be a good option as opposed to spending lots of money on plastic storage bins. They work, don't get me wrong. My 6 year old and I had a blast sucking out the air and watching our huge pile turn into a third of it's original size. I was really pleased! That afternoon, I moved one of the bags to my wicker chair for a moment, the bag barely touched the wicker chair and ripped! Air immediately filled the bag and was back to it's original size. My husband attempted to fix it with duct tape and while it did work, I am hesitant in moving the other bags and am concerned that others will rip and we'll be spending lots of time repairing and resealing.
If the bags were a better plastic (like what they use for comfortors) they'd be great, otherwise, I won't be buying them again... sticking with the tried and true plastic bins!
Customer Review: If you want a giant, one-zip bag, Summary: 2 Stars
then the Space Bag is for you.
I highly do not recommend this item for its intended purpose of staying vacuum sealed since it does not. I filled the bag to its "do not exceed" line and vacuumed the air. The bag compressed, but after a few hours the bag started to fill with air, again.
Pretty much, the bag is like a jumbo, one-zip bag. It's good for putting stuff in it, sitting on top of it to deflate it, and zipping it up for environmental protection.
Oh, and the "zipper" slider, which has to be slided twice for "sealing" the bag, can cut the bag if placed too low along the grooves. Just a bit of info in case you still want to buy the Space Bag.
I won't say that I won't ever buy this product again, but I highly doubt that I would. I think I would buy garbage bags and knot their ends, instead.
Customer Review: Love the concept Summary: 3 Stars
Two out of three bags worked. I use for wedding dress and bedding. Great idea, will probably buy again.
Customer Review: Not impressed! Summary: 2 Stars
I have had trouble with these bags staying sealed. I have done all I can do to try to make sure seal is tight and done correctly. These may work well for puffy/light things like blankets and pillows but I have not found them to be much help with clothes. They really don't save 75% of space and I find half of the ones I have bought to lose their seal on a consistent basis. The large ziploc bags can do just as good of job protecting your items. Also, things do not vacuum down perfectly like the picture on the box. You have to put just a few items in and make sure they are stacked perfectly to achieve this. You get nothing like the picture if you fill bag to the capacity line before vacuuming. You also get a lumpy, not very stackable final result.
Customer Review: Okay for travel, awful for storage Summary: 1 Stars
Space bags are adequate for travel. If you have to pack a lot of items in limited space, these will work. The travel ones in particular are better for this purpose - these are the ones you roll up to remove the air. The vacuum ones are fine if you have access to a vacuum when it's time to pack for home. They'll generally hold their seal while you're traveling and for the duration of your average business trip or vacation.
These are LOUSY for storage, however, especially seasonal or long-term storage. They hold a seal for a few weeks to maybe a month or two, no matter how carefully you follow the instructions, no matter how much air you vacuum out, no matter how 'understuffed' you pack them, and even if you don't touch them again once they're sealed. The air WILL eventually find its way back in and what you'll have - as another reviewer put it - is just another giant Zip-Loc bag.
You can get the same effect for much less cost using large or jumbo-sized Zip-Loc bags. And given that I've had the same success with Zip-Loc bags for traveling that I have with SpaceBags, I can't even justify the price for travel-sized SpaceBags.
